Santa Anita Derby Preview

About the Race and Track

A cool $1 million will be on the line in Arcadia on Saturday as the Santa Anita Derby will bring in racing fans from around the area and online sports betting site players throughout the world.

I’ll Have Another won this race in 2012 and also cashed in the Kentucky Derby and last year Goldencents won this fixture but was only as brief threat in Kentucky.

Interestingly, California Chrome’s trainer Art Sherman was working with Swaps for the Santa Anita Derby and then took him to Kentucky and experienced the May victory.

The surface at Anita figures to play toward speed so unless a crazy pace materializes, logical contenders will have to maintain contact.  A Longshot With Some Value:  Friendswith K Mill

This runner must prove he can win on dirt. He was game in his maiden breaker going a mile and was getting to the winner last time in the entry-level allowance event. The pedigree is solid on top as his sire won the Grade 1 Foster at this distance. The price will be right.

The Pick: California Chrome (Win)

California Chrome is coming to this race sharp. He has won a number of stakes stakes in his career and his tactical speed has been one of the reasons. The runner he beat in his 2014 opener, Tamarando, returned to loop the El Camino Derby field earning a 91 Beyer Speed Figure before failing to fire in the Spiral on the synthetic. In the San Felipe last time, Chrome put in a monster race with a 108 Beyer. He just keeps getting better and this could be a gunfight at the OK Corral showdown with Candy Boy.

Candy Boy seems to be maturing by the hour. His connections had enough confidence in him to try the CashCall Futurity for his final 2013 start and he was far from disgraced when 2nd to the Eclipse Award champ Shared Belief. This horse made a more in the CashCall that was extremely eye-catching. He was extremely impressive taking the Robert B. Lewis and was boosted when the horse that ran second that day, Chitu, won the Sunland Derby with a 102 Beyer Speed Figure.

Hoppertunity was flattered when the winner of his debut Bayern, also trained by Bob Baffert, beat entry-level allowance rivals since by 15 lengths with a 98 Beyer. Bayern would have been highly regarded in the California Chrome’s San Felipe but scratched from that race was a foot bruise. He is headed to the Arkansas Derby next week. This runner was professional winning the Rebel Stakes last month with a career best 100 Beyer. This colt has positional speed but he has shown the ability to pass horses.

Big Tire finally greeted the cameraman after a mile. He has a right to get the trip on top as the unbeaten sire Candy Ride took the mile and a quarter Pacific Classic. His dam lost 3 times but the lone sibling to race Grand Corredora took 2 routes at a mile and a sixteenth and was extending late in both wins. His trainer Mark Glatt has been around and he is from a good family of horsemen.

He knows his runner is up against it but he also has a feeling his trainee will run all day long.
