Spiral Stakes Betting – Tamarando Makes It To The Winner’s Circle At Turfway Park

Posted by on 3/19/2014 9:21:58 PM

The Grade-3 Spiral Stakes is a $550,000 race held in Kentucky as the Derby prep trail heats up. It is for three-year-olds over 1 1/8 miles run on a synthetic surface, and even though the Derby is run on dirt, don’t underestimate the importance of this race.

In a crowded field of potential entrants, Tamarando will beat the rest to the finish line on Saturday.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, March 22nd, post time TBA
Where: Turfway Park, Florence, KY
Pick: Tamarando

(All horses listed as probable as of Wednesday, March 19th)

All Tied Up will be making his graded-stakes debut, and in eight starts, he has two wins, one second-place result and a third, but he also has three fifth-place finishes and an eighth. That type of inconsistency is tough to get behind.

Almost Famous is looking to bounce back from a tough 11th-place run in the Grade-2 Fountain Of Youth, which followed a fourth in the Grade-2 Holy Bull. This colt has two wins in five starts, but those came in allowance and maiden races; he has struggled when going up against better competition.

Asserting Bear finished fifth in the Grade-3 Sam F. Davis, his first race outside of Canada’s Woodbine, and he did well enough to garner another shot against good competition. With a solid run on Saturday, you could hear a lot more from Asserting Bear.

Big Bazinga came in 11th in the Holy Bull in his first start of 2014, then second in an allowance race last month. He has a lot of potential and many thought he would be a factor on the Kentucky Derby prep trail, but he has to prove it and this is a huge race for Big Bazinga.

Coastline finished fourth in the Grade-3 Southwest Stakes, earning him another shot on the Derby trail. He hasn’t finished better than third in his last three starts after beginning his career with two wins and a second, but since the competition has gotten better, Coastline has been inconsistent.

Harry’s Holiday is another horse making his graded-stakes debut, and he has done alright as he moves up, coming off a third-place run in the non-graded John Battaglia Memorial at the beginning of the month. This horse has been brought along at a good pace and he could surprise some people on Saturday in Kentucky.

Poker Player finished just ahead of Harry’s Holiday in the John Battaglia Memorial, but he has started in graded-stakes races before, winning the Grade-3 Bourbon Stakes last year and then finishing eighth in the Grade-1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Which version of Poker Player will show up this weekend? If the Bourbon version is on the track, he could challenge for the win.

Smart Cover is coming off a disappointing 11th-place run in the Grade-3 Palm Beach Stakes in his first start of 2014 at the beginning of March, but that can be chalked up to rust as his previous start came last September. This race should be a better indicator of where Smart Cover is, but it’ll be tough for him to challenge the top horses, although some players feel he will end up at the front on Saturday.

Solitary Ranger won the John Battaglia Memorial, his third win in four starts and two of those wins came in graded-stakes events. A win this weekend would probably put him on the list of contenders for the Kentucky Derby, but he needs a good run to solidify his status; a poor result could undo all his hard work.

Tamarando is one of the favorites of the weekend and after finishing fourth in his first start, he hasn’t fallen out of the top three in 10 starts, winning four times and twice in graded-stakes races. He is coming off a win in the Grade-3 El Camino Real Derby, and Tamarando is going to be a force to be reckoned with on Saturday.

Tourist finally broke his maiden in his fifth attempt, and will now be thrown into a graded-stakes race, which could be a good thing. However, don’t put too much stock in him as it may be too much to handle for this colt right now.

We Miss Artie is another horse that struggled in the Fountain of Youth, finishing eighth and his resume is up and down, which makes it tough to back him. If you go by patterns, he is due for a good race, but can you bet on that?

Z Lucky rounds out the prospective field and he is also making his graded-stakes debut. He has a win, a second and a seventh in three maiden/allowance races, so he’ll end up far down the pecking order.

How It Will Play Out

Tamarando has the experience, speed and guile to post another victory and put him firmly on track for Churchill Downs in May.

Spiral Stakes Betting Pick: Tamarando
