Woodward Stakes Betting – Moreno Pulls Out A Mild Upset

Posted by on 8/28/2014 8:57:19 PM

The Grade-1 Woodward Stakes has had some great horses battle for the win in this race. It is for horses three years and older at Saratoga, and it is run on dirt over 1 1/8 miles, and with a purse of $750,000, the winner will get a nice chunk of change.

This is shaping up to be a very competitive race, but look for Moreno to top some excellent horses when this is run on Saturday.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, August 30, post time 5:45 PM ET

Where : Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga,

Pick : Moreno

Itsmyluckyday had a run of three straight wins come to a halt by finishing second at the Grade-1 Whitney Handicap, and he has been brought alone slowly after taking nine months off. This four-year-old is being groomed for a Breeders’ Cup event, either the Classic or the Mile, so this will be a huge race for Itsmyluckyday.

Last Gunfighter is probably going to be a favorite with Itsmyluckyday, but after winning his 2014 debut in the non-graded Mountainview Handicap, he finished ninth at the Grade-2 Surburban Handicap in July and then fifth at the Whitney Handicap. This five-year-old is also being steered towards the Breeders’ Cup, but there will need to be some improvement.

Long River has finished fifth or worse in his last three starts, and all three were either Grade-1 or Grade-2 event. This might mean that Long River is biting off more than he can chew with this field, but at four years old, this colt could have a surprise or two under his saddle.

Micromanage is coming off a win in the non-graded Birdstone, and prior to a seventh in the Suburban Handicap, he came in second at the Grade-2 Brooklyn Handicap. This four-year-old always seems to be around the front and could be in the running for a top-three finish.

Moreno finished second at the Suburban Handicap, and then won the Whitney Handicap, and he is used to running against good fields. All five of his starts in 2014 have come in graded-stakes races, and he has finished fourth or better in four of them, with the exception coming in the Grade-1 Met Mile in June. This four-year-old has always run against other good horses, so he won’t be overwhelmed by the moment.

Norumbega won the Brooklyn Handicap, but he has also finished eighth in a pair of races, and then second in two other races. What version of this four-year-old is going to show up on Saturday? He has the speed to run with the top horses, but he might not have the temperament and that is going to be something to watch this weekend.

Prayer For Relief followed a third-place run at the Suburban Handicap by finishing fourth at the Whitney Handicap, and this is another horse that is used to running in good fields. He will probably also offer some solid value in comparison to the top horses, so Prayer For Relief will be worth a look. This six-year-old might have one more shot to get to the Breeders’ Cup, and a good showing here on Saturday wouldn’t hurt.

Romansh also ran in those two races, but he finished fifth in the Suburban and seventh at the Whitney, so he’ll be looking for a bit of a bounce-back race. His last graded-stakes win came back in November at the Grade-3 Discovery Handicap, so this four-year-old needs to step up his game and put in a solid effort on Saturday.

Stephanoatsee will be on the low end of the totem pole as he has run in three straight allowance races since finishing eighth in the Grade-3 Mineshaft Handicap in February, but he has improved his results at least, going from fifth to fourth to second. However, this five-year-old is going to need a lot of things to go right just to finish in the top three, much less win.

Zivo rounds out the field after winning the Suburban and he has now finished in the top three in each of his 14 starts. But that might be a little misleading as the Suburban was his first graded-stakes start, so this will be a rest of this five-year-old to see if he is real. Was the Suburban a fluke? We will see on Saturday.

How It Will Play Out

Itsmyluckyday and Last Gunfighter will get the attention, but put a little something on Moreno to beat the field to the wire.

Woodward Stakes Betting Pick: Moreno
