Arlington Million Betting - Up With The Birds Gets To The Winner's Circle

Posted by on 8/13/2015 11:39:32 PM

The Arlington Million is a Grade-1 race that was the first of its kind to give out a prize purse of $1,000,000, and it is run over 1 1/4 miles on turf. It is set for horses aged three years and older, and the winner gets a spot in the Breeders' Cup Turf.

There are some very good horses in this field, but if you want to take a shot at some big money, go with Up With The Birds to stun the field on Saturday.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, August 15th, 2015, post time TBA

Where : Arlington Park, Arlington Heights, IL

Pick : Up With The Birds

Belgian Bill opens up the field and will probably be a longshot after making the trip from Great Britain, and after he finished 19th at the Heritage Handicap in March, he came in second at another one in July. This seven-year-old has 42 races on his resume, which is a lot of miles, especially with all coming on either turf or a synthetic surface.

Big Blue Kitten will be one of the favorites after winning the Grade-1 United Nations in July, which followed a second at the Grade-1 Manhattan Handicap in June a win at the Grade-3 Fort Marcy in May. He has finished first or second in seven of eight starts since an eighth at the Breeders' Cup Turf last year. This seven-year-old is still running like he hasn't run 27 races so far.

Bookrunner was bred in Kentucky, but this is his U.S. debut after three wins in non-graded races overseas, along with a third at the Grade-3 Prix Messidor in July. However, this four-year-old will see that the competition is much more stiff over here.

Ellaval is an Irish gelding that finished second at the Grade-3 Meld Stakes in his last outting, but that was his first finish in the money in five starts and his fourth race in a month. Can this five-year-old pull one more race out of his legs? We'll see on Saturday.

Legendary came in third at the Manhattan Handicap following a fifth at the Grade-2 Dixie in May, but he has finished in the money just once in his last four starts, all of the graded-stakes variety. This six-year-old is good, but can he be great for just one day?

Maverick Wave is another American-bred horse that has spent his time overseas and he has run about half of his 13 starts on turf. He did win the Grade-3 Huxley Stakes, but that was his graded-stakes debut and the field will be much tougher on Saturday at Arlington Park. However, he could be a solid bet to finish in the top three.

Quiet Force won the Grade-3 Arlington Handicap last month and while that is a nice precursor to the Million, the fields are better for the latter and this five-year-old will need an extra gear to make some noise on Saturday. In three graded-stakes starts, he has one in the money and that was at the Handicap.

Shining Copper came in fourth at the United Nations, which was his first graded-stakes start since August 2013 as he ran a string of allowance/claiming races. To finish in the money, this five-year-old gelding might need the race of his life just to get there.

Slumber is going to be a favorite as he goes head-to-head once again with Big Blue Kitten. This Great Britain-bred horse beat BBK in the Manhattan Handicap, then finished second at the United Nations and both races have been very fun to watch. Expect nothing less from the third meeting of the season.

The Pizza Man is going for his third win in a row after the non-graded Opening Verse in May and then the Grade-3 Stars and Stripes last month, but he has run just two races in 2015 and while he'll make a push for the money, this six-year-old gelding might come up just short.

Triple Threat hails from France and won his American debut at the Grade-2 Monmouth Stakes in June, which was his first start since last September. It'll be interesting to see how his five-year-old legs hold up against the top tier in this field.

Up With The Birds comes from Canada and finished fourth in this race last year, and he has finished in the money in three of four starts since then, including a third at the Arlington Handicap. Pound for pound, this five-year-old might be the best bet of the bunch.

How It Will Play Out

While there are better horses in the field, Up With The Birds isn't far off and offers the best value for your money.
