Barbara Fritchie Handicap Betting – Princess Violet Takes The Crown

Posted by on 2/12/2015 8:56:26 PM

The Grade-2 Barbara Fritchie Handicap is for fillies and mares aged four years and older, and it features a purse of $300,000. It is a seven-furlong race that is run on dirt, and it will be held at Laurel Park, where it has taken place since 1952.

There are two horses that seem to stand out from the rest as Sam's Sister and Princess Violet might make it a duel going down the stretch. Take Princess Violet to get to the winner's circle in what should be a very entertaining race to watch.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, February 14th, post time TBA

Where : Laurel Park, Laurel, MD

Pick : Princess Violet

Before You Know It has made 20 starts, but 19 have come in maiden/allowance/claiming/other races. She is coming off a second at the non-graded Nellie Morse last month, so this five-year-old mare is trying to prove that she can be a winner against a strong field.

Best Behavior is making her graded-stakes debut, but this is her 19th start. She hasn't finished worse that fourth in a race, but 16 have been maiden/claiming/allowance events. She has a win and two runner-up finishes in three non-graded races, so this is the race in which we'll see what this five-year-old mare from Canada is really made of.

Disco Barbie has finished in the money in two graded-stakes events, and she has finished second in four starts, but she has never won a race. She could be a darkhorse to watch on Saturday, and this five-year-old mare could have a lot of value.

Expression is making her 26th starts, but first in a graded-stakes race. She is coming off a third at the non-graded Interborough, but this six-year-old mare might need to find another gear to compete with this field. If she finds it, the field could be in trouble.

Flattering Bea finished sixth in the race last year, just one of two graded-stakes starts she has made out of ten starts in total. This five-year-old mare finished seventh at the non-graded What A Summer in January, so she will have a lot of work to do to finish in the money.

Lady Sabelia won the aforementioned What A Summer, and she has five wins in six starts, although none have been in a graded-stakes race. This is another mare that has something to prove on Saturday, but with a few breaks, Lady Sabelia could cause an upset at Laurel Park.

Miss Mischief came in fourth at the Nellie Morse and she is another five-year-old mare making her debut in a graded-stakes race. She does have three wins in nine starts, but Miss Mischief has to step up her game in order to win this weekend.

Princess Violet is an intriguing possibility and she has gone up against some good fields with solid results. She finished second to Untapable in the Grade-1 Mother Goose last June, then she won the non-graded Empire Distaff Handicap in October and second at the Grade-3 Go For Wand Handicap in November. This is her first start since then, but this four-year-old filly could be, pound for pound, the best horse in the field.

Sam's Sister might have something to say about that as she won the Grade-1 La Brea on Boxing Day, then took the Grade-2 Santa Monica last month. She has five wins in six starts and outside of an eighth-place finish in an allowance race in November, no other horse has been able to touch this four-year-old filly.

Stormy Novel has finished out of the money in two graded-stakes starts, and three of her four wins have come in allowance races. She is coming off a decent fourth at the Interborough, and this four-year-old filly will have to take it to another level to run with the likes of Sam's Sister and Princess Violet.

Toasting has made 23 starts, eight of which have been in graded-stakes events. She has finished in the money three times in those races, finishing third in all of them, including the 2013 Black-Eyed Susan, the female equivalent of the Preakness Stakes. She finished fourth at the non-graded Sunshine Millions Distaff to open up 2015, which is slightly encouraging.

How It Will Play Out

There are a few interesting choices for this race on Saturday, but Princess Violet should beat Sam's Sister to the wire to take an important victory on Valentine's Day.
