Belmont Derby Betting – Divisidero Proves To Be A Turf Star

Posted by on 7/2/2015 11:16:16 PM

The Grade-1 Belmont Derby was called the Jamaica Handicap from its beginnings in 1929 to last year, when it was renamed, moved from October to July and the distance was increased to 1 1/4 miles, from 1 1/8 miles. The purse was also bumped up from $500,000 to a hefty $1,250,000, not to mention the prestige that goes with winning this turf event. This race is also for three year olds only.

There are some solid colts and geldings in this field for what should be an exciting race on the Fourth of July, which is one of the most festive times of the year. However, a horse from Kentucky will romp to the win at Belmont Park, home of the Belmont Stakes, as Divisidero should grab the victory and be pointed towards the Breeders' Cup Turf race later this year. Take him to the bank.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, July 4th, 2015;

Where : Belmont Park, Elmont, NY

Pick : Divisidero

Bolo won an allowance race in his last start in May, where earlier in the month, he had finished 12th at the Kentucky Derby. However, prior to that, he had came in third in two straight graded-stakes events. After a little more than a month off, Bolo should be rested and he might be one of the favorites on Saturday.

Canndal is making his United States debut after four starts in France, none of which he won and only one was a graded-stakes race, but he did finished third or better in three of the four. It'll be interesting to see how the travel affected him, but Canndal is an unknown to most.

Closing Bell doesn't have much experience at all as he just broke his maiden in May, and that came on dirt, so not only is this his graded-stakes debut, this is his first race on turf as well. Keep your expectations lowered for Closing Bell as you can't be quite sure what you're going to get with him.

Divisdero has won three of his four starts, including one at the Grade-2 American Turf in May, and in March, he had a third at the Grade-3 Palm Beach. There is a lot of speed in this three-year-old, but he hasn't gotten a lot of attention so far. This could be the race where he becomes a big name in the horse racing community.

Force The Pass has finished first or second in all five of his starts so far, and he won the Grade-3 Penn Mile in May. That was his graded-stakes debut, but he has never run over a mile, so that is going to be something to watch as we come down the stretch at Belmont Park.

Granny's Kitten came in third at the aforementioned Penn Mile after breaking his maiden in his first try, and then an allowance race. This colt hasn't run the distance of 1 1/4 miles, but he did manage to get through 1 1/8 miles in the allowance race, which is close; again, keep an eye on this horse down the stretch on Saturday.

Postulation finished sixth in his first maiden try and needed three attempts to break it, but outside of that first race, he has finished in the money in seven starts, including three wins. However, this is his graded-stakes debut, so this will be easily the toughest test of his career. He has run the distance many times and seven of his eight starts have come on turf.

Startup Nation has made just one start in 2015 after finishing 11th at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf last Halloween. His third at the non-graded Pennine Ridge in May was encouraging, but Startup Nation might need to show a little more before you start going all-in with his colt.

Takeover Target has made two starts in his career, breaking his maiden on his first try and then second at the Pennine Ridge, so this will be his graded-stakes debut. However, he has showed a ton of promise in those two starts and while he might be out of his element here, he could look great in the future against better competition.

How It Will Play Out

Divisidero has been one of the top turf horses as a three-year-old so far, and you should look forward to seeing him at the Breeders' Cup Turf later this year. Look for him in the winner's circle on Saturday at Belmont Park.

Belmont Derby Betting Pick: Divisidero
