Breeders’ Cup Classic Preview

Posted by on 10/26/2015 9:57:59 PM

The granddaddy of them all, the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic is shaping up as dramatic theater with a little bit of a story line for every taste on Halloween at Keeneland.

First and foremost, the Triple Crown champ will lead the field. He is coming off the first defeat of the year in the Travers but he ran super in defeat that day. His trainer Bob Baffert has been adamant that he will only put the horse in a spot he thinks he can win and the racer will have to prove to the conditioner that he is up to the task.

Beholder , and automatic qualifier for the Classic off her Pacific Classic win, proved it was no fluke by waltzing home in the Zenyatta Stakes. She is going great guns, has proven she is not scared of racing against the boys and Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella is pulling the strings.

Hard Aces is also an automatic player off his win in the Santa Anita Gold Cup but he has been very dull since.

Honor Code punched his ticket for the Classic with his Whitney win. He caught a soft pace in the Kelso and had to settle for a third and will likely ship to Keeneland right on top of the race. His style demands a hot pace and clear sailing.

Smooth Roller was just that taking the Awesome Again and that gives him the right to go for the big bucks. He is a very nice story since Victor Garcia conditions him, a very good horsemen who has not been on this stage before.

Tonalist e arned his way into the Classic by defending his title in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. He has been very consistent this year and he fires just about every time.

Frosted got a weird trip in the Travers but rebounded with a win in the Pennslyvania Derby, when re-united with Joel Rosario. He has shown more tactical speed and that will help him in the Classic.

Keen Ice was the shocking winner of the Travers but it seemed to take something out of him.

The wild card for the race could be Gleneagles. He was beaten October 17 at Ascot by a quality runner inSolow, which would only give him 2 weeks to the Classic, but this is a true superstar and his trainer Aidan O’Brien took the BC Turf in 2013 with Magician.

Gleneagles may not have cared for the easy ground on the Ascot course. The decision to finally run him was made less than an hour before the race and after the race his trainer said he should not have run in the Ascot event.

This race is not just about Beholder and American Pharoah. There are of a ton of subplots and if a speed duel develops, it could be anybody’s ballgame.

One other thing to seriously keep in mind is the long-range weather report suggests rain could be the air. That may be the ultimate equalizer.
