Breeders' Cup Classic Betting – American Pharoah Finshes Career With Win

Posted by on 10/28/2015 10:14:40 PM

The Breeders' Cup Classic is the centerpiece of the Breeders' Cup meet, and you could consider it to be a bigger race than the Triple Crown events. It features a purse of $5,000,000 and is for horses three years and older, as it is run over 1 1/4 miles on dirt. This year, the Classic will be held at Keeneland.

American Pharoah is a history-making thoroughbred and after winning the Triple Crown, he'll go out to stud at the end of this race. He'll ride off into the sunset with a win in the Classic and if he wasn't the Horse Of The Year before, he will be after Saturday.

What: Horse Betting

When: Saturday, October 31st, 2015; post time 5:35 PM ET

Where: Keeneland, Lexington, KY

Pick: American Pharoah

American Pharoah, of course, won the Triple Crown, then followed it up with a win at the Grade-1 Haskell Invitational. However, his eight-race winning streak came to a halt with a second at the Grade-1 Travers Stakes in August, and he hasn't raced since. A win for this three-year-old will cement what it always a pretty solid legacy.

Beholder is trying to become the second filly/mare to win the Classic after Zenyatta won in 2009. The five-year-old mare has won six in a row, including the Grade-1 Zenyatta Stakes in September. She also won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies in 2012, then the Distaff in 2013. This is a legacy race for Beholder as well.

Effinex is coming off a third at the Grade-1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, and he won the Grade-2 Suburban Handicap in July. His performance at the Gold Cup was very encouraging, but this field might be a little too deep for this four-year-old.

Frosted has finished in the money in ten of his 12 career starts, and this year, he has won the Grade-1 Wood Memorial, the Grade-2 Pennsylvania Derby and finished second at the Belmont Stakes. This three-year-old could definitely sneak into the top three with an excellent run.

Gleneagles hails from Ireland and is making his North American debut, but he finished sixth at the Grade-1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in England. However, that was just two weeks ago, and this three-year-old has never run on dirt, or longer than a mile. Don't expect much out of this colt.

Hard Aces has finished sixth in three of his last five starts, including two in a row, but he also won the Grade-1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita in July. If that version of this five-year-old shows up, he has a chance. But if not, it'll be a long day for Hard Aces.

Honor Code won the Grade-1 Met Mile in July, then the Grade-1 Whitney in August and is coming off a third-place run at the Grade-2 Kelso handicap earlier this month. He seems to do better at a mile, but against this field, this four-year-old might be in over his head a little.

Keen Ice beat out American Pharoah at the Travers, and after finishing seventh at the Kentucky Derby, he finished third at the Belmont and then second at the Haskell. This three-year-old has shown that he can hang with American Pharoah and even pull out a win on occasion, but it'll be tough to do it twice in a row.

Smooth Roller has three wins in four starts, but one was an allowance race and then in his first maiden try. He also won the Grade-1 Awesome Again in September, but this four-year-old gelding has never come up against a field like this, and it'll be a great test for his earning power going forward.

Tonalist rounds out the field and has quietly had a solid year. He has two wins, two second-place results and a third in his last five starts and won the Jockey Club Gold Cup (for the second year in a row) against a good field. He also won the Belmont last year and then finished fifth at the Classic. This is another great value bet to finish in the money and with a few breaks, you never know what can happen.

How It Will Play Out

This race could come down to American Pharoah and Beholder, although Honor Code could get off to a great start and Frosted will be in the mix somewhere. However, it's hard to bet against American Pharoah in 2015, and he should be your pick for the Breeders' Cup Classic.
