Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Preview

Posted by on 9/16/2015 8:50:35 AM

One thing is certain about this year’s Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and that there will be no repeat champion as Goldencents, who won this race the last 2 years, has been retired.

This race was inaugurated in 2007 and it is basically for runners that are a cut below the best in the lane.

When Goldencents won this race in 2013 he was clocked in 1:35.12 but last year he was a bit slower. The record time for the race was the 1:33 41 set by Albertus Maximus in 2008.

If the connections of Honor Code decide not to go in the BC Classic he will be super tough in this race. He is a multiple Grade 1 winner that has won 3 of 4 this year.

Appealing Tate should love this mile distance. He just failed to hold in his July finale going a mile and a sixteenth when beaten a head but then cashed at the demanding distance of 7-furlongs in his last race when extending at the end.

He has never been out of the exacta in his last 5 races and has been in the money in 17 of 24 starts.

Gimme Da Lute has speed but doesn’t need the lead to win. Trained by Bob Baffert, this runner won the Grade 2 Los Al Derby at 9 furlongs, won as the prohibitive chalk last time and has won his last 4 races.

Carve was hung wide in the BC Mile last year at 17-1. He is a Grade 3 winner that has handled a number of different surfaces but he has not been sharp of late, losing his last 5 races.

Are You Kidding Me will be trying to do something he has never done and that is winning on dirt in the BC Mile.

He is multiple Grade 2 winner, has tactical speed and should be value in this race.

Identical has positional speed but he will be overmatched in all likelihood. He only has won 3 races in his career and at 7 furlongs last time, he was losing ground.

Madefromlucky , trained by Todd Pletecher, turned into a new horse once he was given a chance to go a route of ground. He has not ducked anybody in his career as he was 2nd to American Pharoah in the Rebel early in the year and he just recorded his career top Beyer with a clever comeback win in the Grade 2 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer.

Four for 10 in his career, he has enough speed to maintain contact but with a projected fast pace in the BC Mile, he will likely have to come from left field to get there.

Another Pletcher student Protonico is versatile and will be dangerous. He didn’t fire in the Woodward last time but is a multiple Graded winner. His best asset could be that he is proven at Keeneland as he won the Grade 3 Ben Ali at 9 furlongs this year with a 107 Beyer.

This race is shaping up as a wide-open event and the trip will be everything to the winner.
