Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Preview

In sports, the television networks salivate over a possible East/West showdown when it comes to the Finals, whether it would be in the NBA , in the World Series or even in the Super Bowl but racing fans also get pumped up for geographical rivalries and they could get it this year.

Over the years the Juvenile has been run to current form. Going into the last year favorites won 37% of the Juvenile and last year Texas Red took advantage of a hot pace and came from dead last to be the Juvenile victor at 13-1.

The average Juvenile winner has paid over $17 before the surprise by Texas Red and note the Juvenile favorite has been in the exacta in the last 9 years.

This year Nyquist will come to the BC Juvenile unbeaten. He took the FrontRunner on Saturday at Santa Anita but had to work but he made it. He chased the rank outsider Go Long early, took over at the top of the lane but had to work very hard to stave off Swipe to win by three quarters of a length.

Nyquist earned a 79 Beyer Speed Figure. Last year American Pharoah recorded a 101 Beyer in this race.

Hollywood Don completed the trifecta.

Percolator rode the rails to victory in his shore debut at 9-1 and was trouble in his next start in the Grade 3 Sanford at Saratoga. He is in the clever hands of John Servis and this runner’s sibling Vow of Honor did win a route vs. soft foes.

His dam was a non-winner but kin to a pair of stakes winners including near $425,000 earner The Lady’s Groom.

Saratoga Mischief broke onto the racing scene successful when holding together by a neck in a Saratoga sprint. He returned there in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special and ran his heart out in defeat.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, this runner is from a modest family but his dam is kin to a pair of 6-figure earners.

Uncle Vinny has talent, but there could be stamina concerns. He won his debut impressively and was put up in the Sanford but came back to earth when hooking Ralis in the Hopeful. Both of Uncle Vinny’s siblings are 6-figure earners and his dam did win a stakes too.

Sticksstatelydude was educated in his debut at Churchill in June but acted professionally breaking his maiden at Saratoga. He settled early while racing wide and won going away. He has trained fast since that effort and is out of a winning dam. The dam also dropped multiple stakes winner Saturday Nite Ride, who won routing and earned over $220,000.

Magna Light has finished first in two of his 3 starts but he was taken down in the Sanford and he proved in his debut that he could handle the off going.

He has trained forwardly since running second in the Hopeful and both of his siblings won. Go deep in his pedigree and Winning Connections, an over $500,000 earner shows up.

Cocked and Loaded has something going for him and that is he broke his maiden at Keeneland. He won the $246,000 Tremont next out and is coming off a win in the Grade 3 Iroquois, where he earned a career best 81 Beyer Speed Figure.

He has easily out run his $16,000 purchase price and although his pedigree is modest, there are several 6-figure earners in the family including a near $400,000 earner.

If Air Force Blue shows up in the Juvenile he will not be here for the frequent flyer miles. He won three of his first 4 races including a pair of Group 1s and is in the world-class hands of Aidan O’Brien.

As the race is drawn, give an edge to the youngsters that have tactical speed.
