Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Preview

Posted by on 10/5/2015 9:49:54 PM

The most talented baby fillies in the world have their day in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and a win in this race almost always means that heroine will be award the Eclipse Award as the best in her division.

Rachel’s Valentina will be trying to make it 3 for 3 in the Juvenile Fillies as she broke her maiden at Saratoga and proved it was no fluke taking the Grade 1 Spinster in her next by a length.

Trained by Todd Pletcher Rachel’s Valentina’s foes in the Spinway were well clear of nearest rivals and that’s always a plus.

By an Eclipse winner and out of champion and Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, this miss is a perfect example of breeding the best to the best and hoping for the best.

A showdown between the best of the East in Rachel’s Valentina and the best in the West Songbird seems to be in the cards for the Cup this year.

Songbird is now 3 for 3. She has improving Beyer Speed Figures, has extended in all of her wins and she proved she could get this distance with a 90 Beyer the end of September.

Jerry Hollendorfer is not much of a national name since he usually stays on the West Coast, but there is not a better trainer in the game and he has Songbird thriving.

And there is class on the bottom side as Songbird’s dam took a Grade 2, won a third of her 18 outs and banked nearly $650,000.

Just Wicked won 2 of her first 3 wins including a Grade 2 but was caught 5 wide in her race 2 races back when the beaten chalk. She had the valid excuse of the slop last time.

Out of a stakes winning dam, and the dam is kin to multiple stakes winner and over $250,000 earner Western Prize.

Brilliant since her debut, Pretty N Cool proved she could handle the off going in her first race and then repeated in the Grade 2 Sorrento. She pushed the issue last time in the Del Mar Debutante but could not close the deal.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Pretty N Cool is out of a winning dam that is a sibling to Grade 1 winner and near $400,000 earner Sean Avery.

If Nemoralia makes the trip from England, she will have to be dealt with accordingly. It took her a couple of races to figure it out but she has won 2 in a row now and the last win came against 18 rivals. Any horse that can beat that many rivals can run.

Both of her siblings won, her dam won multiple stakes and go deep in her pedigree and searchers will find multiple Grade 2 winner American Royale.

The grand master Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lucas has won Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies a record 6 times including last year with Take Charge Brandi.

Over the decades this race has been run according to form. Since the 1984 favorites had won 57% of the time in this race but last year Take Charge Brandi rocked the boat in a huge way going wire-to-wire as the longest shot on the tote board to pay $125.40.

Despite the success of the favorites, one could still get paid in this race as the average Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies superfecta had paid over $3,500 going into last year and Take Charge Brandi keyed a life changing hit of $97,600.

Favorites have been in the money 24 of 31 times in this race and the Juvenile Fillies has exited a Belmont prep 12 times. Ten of the last 13 Juvenile Fillies winners were also coming off a win.

When evaluating this race at crunch time, pay strict attention to the pace and don’t get caught up in the hype.
