Breeders’ Cup Mile Preview

Posted by on 10/14/2015 10:05:41 PM

Trainer Andre Fabre, a son of a diplomat, could have the Breeders’ Cup Mile surrounded if he decides to bring all his bullets to Keeneland on Halloween.

Fabre was the leading jump jockey in France as a young man but his is a training legend.

He has been the champion trainer in France at least 24 times and has won multiple Group 1s around the world.

His trainees include stars like In the Wings, Soviet Star, Trempolino, Hurricane Run and Arcangues, who paid the highest price ever in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

He has won the Arlington Million and 4 Breeders’ Cups and this year his Mile participants could include Territories, Make Believe and Esoterique.

Territories was 2nd to the star Gleneagles in May but has won 3 of his 8 career races with 3 seconds and 2 thirds. He may not have adored the soft going in his last race when second.

Make Believe had some converts after his last race when he won the Group 1 Prix de la Foret at Longchamp.

He is 4 for 6 career, lost one race but a head and was just overmatched in his lone poor effort.

Esoterique is a mare with a flare. She has a penchant for finding the wire, has won a pair of Group 1s in a row and she has beaten the boys on way to her near $1.5 million pocket book.

If Grand Arch goes in the Mile he will try to steal it. He was super game in the Shadwell Mile last time and is coming to the race right.

The horses that finished one/two in the Woodbine Mile, Mondialiste and Lea, trained by Bill Mott, could pit their skills in this race and they must be respected.

Mott also has another runner primed and that is Tourist, who is fresh from winning the More Than Ready stakes.

As far as the betting has been concerned in this race, don’t be scared to swallow the chalk. Going into this race last year the favorite had won the Mile 37% of the time.

Last year the favorite Toronado pressed the issue but gave way, which opened the door for the European, and 30-1 shot Karakontie. Another Euro Anodin completed the exacta.

Before last year the average winner of the Mile paid over $21 while the average superfecta returned nearly 14 grand.

The Woodbine Mile has produced the winner of 3 of the last 4 winners of the Mile and blondes have had their share of fun in this fixture.

Fillies have beaten the boys 15 times in BC history but they have done it 8 times in this race.

American racers are usually up against it in this event. A mile on grass is a European staple but don’t get caught up in just the top Euro that comes over for this race.

With a change in venue and the seasonal change in America, sometimes the top Euros just don’t fire.

But that doesn’t mean the second stringers can’t step up to the plate and hit it out of the park.
