Chilukki Stakes Betting – Birdatthewire Returns To The Winner's Circle

Posted by on 11/5/2015 11:16:09 PM

The Chilukki Stakes is a Grade-2 event that is for fillies and mares aged three years and older, and it is run during the Fall Meet at Churchill Downs. It brings a purse of $200,000 to the table and it is named after Chilukki, which won the American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly award in 1999 and set a few track records at Churchill Downs. This race is run over a mile on a dirt surface.

Near the end of the calender year, the fields get a little tougher to handicap and this is no exception as the best horses have all taken some time off. Birdatthewire hasn't raced since May at Churchill Downs. Still, she is the top horse in this field and should be your betting pick on Saturday.

What: Horse Betting

When: Saturday, November 7th, 2015; post time 5:15 PM ET

Where: Churchill Downs, Louisville, KY

Pick: Birdatthewire

Ahh Chocolate has finished eighth or worse in her last two graded-stakes races with an allowance-race win in the middle, but earlier in the year, she finished third at the Grade-2 Black-Eyed Susan. The speed is here, but this three-year-old filly might be simply wearing down for 2015, which happens sometimes.

Ambusher has made three graded-stakes starts in her career, finishing fourth in all three, including at the Grade-3 Groupie Doll in August. If she is going to finish in the money, this might be the race that this five-year-old mare does it. However, a seventh at the non-graded Locust Grove in September isn't encouraging.

Birdatthewire is probably the prohibitive favorite, but she hasn't raced since a fifth at the Grade- Kentucky Oaks in May. In her first three starts of 2015, she won the Grade-2 Forward Gal and the Grade-2 Gulfstream Park Oaks, and second at the Grade-2 Davona Dale. How will this layoff affect this three-year-old filly? We will see on Saturday.

Gold Medal Dancer had finished in the money in her first four starts of 2015, which were all graded-stakes races and she won the Grade-2 Azeri in March. She also finished sixth at the Grade-2 Fleur De Lis in July, which was her last start and at five years old, you have to wonder how this little layoff from the track will affect this mare. It might be easier for a three-year-old like Birdatthewire to bounce back, but again, we will see on Saturday.

Keen Pauline won the Black-Eyed Susan, and then it has been all downhill for her as she finished sixth at the Grade-1 Coaching Club American Oaks in July. She followed that up with a ninth at the Grade-1 Cotillion in September. This three-year-old has been up and down for most of her career anyway, so the win at the Black-Eyed Susan looks like it was the exception more than the rule.

Serene Melody is a definite darkhorse as she needed eight tries to break her maiden, and then she finished second in an allowance race. That was also back in October of last year, and she has been run on all types of surfaces, so she doesn't know which she prefers yet. In a race like this, Serene Melody isn't a good bet to make, so stay away from this five-year-old mare.

Shanon Nicole was apparently brought out of retirement for this race and her last start was in anuary, when she finished third at the non-graded Houston Ladies Classic. She had a decent 2015 as she finished third at the Grade-3 Rachel Alexandra in February, but eighth-place results at the Grade-3 Bourbonette Oaks and the Black-Eyed Susan showed that she wasn't up for high-level racing consistently. She might be the most intriguing option of the field.

Spelling Again came in fourth in her graded-stakes debut in October at the Grade-2 Thoroughbred Club of America, but she has run a mile only twice, and finished sixth and eighth. After six months off, she won the non-graded Open Mind at Churchill Downs, but that was six furlongs. Keep an eye on this mare as we get down to the homestretch of this race.

How It Will Play Out

Shanon Nicole is one to look at, but she hasn't raced competitively in ten months, and Gold Medal Dancer is also one to look at. The best horses in this field have had some time off, so it makes it difficult to handicap, but go with the best horse available and that is Birdatthewire.

Chilukki Stakes Betting Pick: Birdatthewire
