Cigar Mile Handicap Betting – Red Vine Keeps Tonalist Out Of Winner's Circle

Posted by on 11/26/2015 8:46:01 PM

The Cigar Mile Handicap is a Grade-1 race that is run over a mile on dirt, and it is for horses three years old and up. It features a purse of $500,000 at Aqueduct and it is named after Cigar, which won the U.S. Outstanding Older Male Horse and the Horse Of The Year in 1995 and 1996. Cigar also won such prestigious races as the Hollywood Gold Cup and the Jockey Club Gold Cup, along with the Breeders' Cup Classic and the Dubai World Cup. He is in the Hall of Fame.

This field of seven is an exciting list of horses and it should be a very thrilling one-mile race, and there is even a former Triple Crown winner slated to run as well. However, Tonalist will have to take a back seat at Red Vine will cause a slight upset and go to victory on Saturday in New York.

What: Horse Betting

When: Saturday, November 28th, 2015; post time 3:50 PM ET

Where: Aqueduct, Ozone Park, NY

Pick: Red Vine

Full Of Mine finally broke his maiden after his eighth try, which means you shouldn't expect much from this four-year-old. Oddly enough, he lost seven times at Aqueduct before going to Belmont Park, where he broke it. Maybe Aqueduct just isn't the place for Full Of Mine, a horse that will need a lot to go right just to finish in the money.

Marking won an allowance race at a mile at Aqueduct in November and if he goes on run well here, he might be in the Grade-1 Malibu on Boxing Day. He was sired by Bernardini, which won the Preakness Stakes in 2006, along with the Grade-1 Travers Stakes, the Grade-1 Jockey Club Gold Cup and he finished second to Invasor in the Breeders' Cup Classic. This three-year-old has some great genes.

Matrooh won the Grade-3 Bold Ruler on Halloween, and that race was at seven furlongs. He won an allowance race at a mile in March and another one at 1 1/16 miles in July. This is a solid test for this five-year-old gelding, to see what his future will be. His sire, Distorted Humor, finished third in this race in 1998, so genes could be the story for another horse this weekend.

Mshawish is coming off a fourth-place run at the Breeders' Cup Mile and he won two graded-stakes races to start 2015. However, this five-year-old might be slowly running out of gas after finishing out of the money in his last two starts and while this is a smaller field, he still might not be able to crack the top three on Saturday.

Private Zone is the defending champion in this race after finishing second in 2013, and he finished second to Runhappy at the Breeders' Cup Sprint. He has finished in the money in nine straight races dating back to September 2014 and all of those races were of the graded-stakes variety. This six-year-old gelding is a lot of fun of watch and deserves to come back for the chance to defend his title, and he would be a solid bet on Saturday.

Red Vine needed three tries to break his maiden, and the first 15 races of his career were maiden/allowance races. But his last four starts have been graded-stakes events and he has finished in the money in all four: second at the Grade-3 Salvator Mile, third at the Grade-1 Pacific Classic, second at the Grade-2 Kelso Handicap and third at the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. This five-year-old hasn't had your typical route to the big races, but he can surely hold his own.

Tonalist is probably the favorite for this race after finishing fifth at the Breeders' Cup Classic for the second straight year. That followed a win at the Jockey Club Gold Cup, which he has won two years in a row, and he has five graded-stakes win under his saddle. One of those were the Belmont Stakes in 2014, where he ended California Chrome's run at the Triple Crown. He has a win and a second-place run at a mile, and he should be near the front on Saturday.

How It Will Play Out

Tonalist should be the favorite, but Red Vine and Private Zone were built for these races. If you want to go for a little bigger of a payout, place your bet with Red Vine on Saturday at Aqueduct.
