Claiming Crown Jewel Stakes Betting – Royal Posse Claims The Crown Jewel

Posted by on 12/3/2015 11:49:15 PM

The Claiming Crown Jewel Stakes is a non-graded race that is the main event of Gulfstream Park's opening weekend. This race is 1 1/8 miles long featuring a purse of $200,000, and Saturday's race will give 14 horses a chance to showcase their speed in order to be claimed.

Royal Posse is coming off a win in a relatively big race, and he should be your pick for the Crown Jewel at Gulfstream Park.

What: Horse Betting

When: Saturday, December 5th, 2015; post time 5:05 PM ET

Where: Gulfstream Park, Hallandale Beach, FL

Pick: Royal Posse

Aces For John has made one non-graded start, finishing fifth at the Jackson Bend Stakes in August. He has been off since finishing second in an allowance race in September, but this three-year-old has never run more a mile, so that's something to watch for.

African Fighter has run a mile and 40 yards twice, but he did need four tries to break his maiden, which he did way back in March. That is a long time for a horse to be off the track, so this three-year-old might have some rust to shake off.

Freestyler ran a pair of conditions races in 2012 at a mile, and he finished third and fourth in them. However, he hasn't run since November 2012, so it's hard to imagine that this five-year-old gelding can jump right back into the swing of things on Saturday.

Indycott finished third at the non-graded Temperence Hill Invitational in September, and he has made one graded-stakes stars, finishing seventh at the Grade-2 New Orleans Handicap in March. At least he has run over a mile, and this four-year-old might have a shot in this field.

Lieutenant Seany O won an allowance race in October, his first win since a claiming race last August. This four-year-old horse is very solid and capable of winning on his day, and he might be worth laying a little on this Saturday.

Mal Guapo might be a favorite on Saturday as he has won five of his last six starts; three claiming races, then he finished 10th at the Grade-3 Texas Mile in May, took five months off and returned with wins in back-to-back starter races. This field isn't much better than what he would see in starter races, so this five-year-old gelding could be a problem.

Market Blaster has finished fifth in back-to-back non-graded races, but he has been off the track since September. Still, that isn't as long as many of the horses in this field and this five-year-old could make some noise.

Mr. Palmer won a claiming race in October and has had some great performances in the past, notably a fourth-place run at he Grade-1 Wood Memorial in 2013. This five-year-old is well past his prime, but he might have the legs to make one last run.

Padilla finished second in an allowance race in October, which followed a second at the non-graded Mr. Steele in September and he won an allowance race earlier that month. This five-year-old is another horse that could be considered a favorite on Saturday.

Rich Daddy has finished third in three of his last four races, most recently at the non-graded Sensitive Prince in September. He also won an allowance race in August, and this four-year-old gelding has fared well at this distance. Give him a look this weekend.

Rizwan is a baby in this field at three years old, but he won the non-graded English Channel in May. He also finished fifth in an allowance race in September, so it's a matter of which version of this horse shows up at Gulfstream Park.

Royal Posse should be considered a favorite after finishing first and second in back-to-back allowance races, then he won the non-graded Evan Shipman in September. This four-year-old gelding has been brought along slowly in terms of distance, but seems to get better as the race goes longer and that is encouraging.

Second City hasn't finished in the money in six races, although he won back-to-back claiming races earlier this year. Still, he hasn't improved throughout the year, so don't expect much from this six-year-old gelding that simply might be out of gas.

U.S.S. Boxer rounds out the field and he is another young horse at three, and he recently finished fourth at a starter race in October. He finished second in another starter race that month, so there is a little promise there.

How It Will Play Out

Royal Posse ran against a decent field at the Evan Shipman, and that gives him an edge over some other horses in this deep field. Take him for your pick.
