About the Race and Track

Santa Anita

The Grade 1 $750,000 mile and a quarter Delaware Handicap for fillies and mares drew a cool 7 pack and will be renewed Saturday.

First run as the New Castle Handicap in 1937, the Delaware Handicap has been won by a number of stars over the years.

Runners like Flower Bowl, Obeah, Susan’s Girl, Relaxing, Blind Luck and Royal Delta have greeted their connections in the winner’s circle after this race.

Last year Rudy Rodriquez saddled Belle Gallantey, who was coming off a fifth but wired the Delaware Handicap with a 99 Beyer Speed Figure.

A Longshot With Some Value: Fortune Pearl

Half of Fortune Pearl’s 4 wins came for today’s rider Trevor McCarthy and she should be a juicy price.

The Pick: Rosalind (Win)

The first thing that comes to mind looking at this race is the paucity of speed in the line-up. Not one of the runners really seems to thrive on the front end, which could mean the pace will be moderate at best.

Frivolous will be out to prove her recent 32-1 shocking victory over Sheer Drama was no fluke. She pressed a live pace that day, was only a head off the lead after 6 furlongs and was inching away late.

America has tried several Graded races in her career to no avail. She conceded 13 lengths early last time and just ran out of real estate. Her lone win this year came on the inner strip at the Big A when up by a nose in a $100,000 stakes.

Fortune Pearl likes this layout. She won the Grade 2 Oaks last year and she was coming away late in the mile and a sixteenth effort.

Flashy American is a reformed claimer that has turned into a super nice horse. She could be a bit fragile as the races have been spaced but she ran super last time when beaten a neck. If you figure she just needed the last effort, one can build a case for a move forward.

This mare pressed the issue in this race last year when a tiring third.

Sheer Drama is probably the one to beat but she is not a win machine. She is 4 for 17 in her career but has finished 2nd 8 times. Sheer Drama ran once at this track. It was in her racing debut and she was a distant 2nd in the slop.

Rosalind has never won on dirt. She proved her class taking the Grade 1 Ashland last year for today’s rider Joel Rosario, took a Grade 2 on grass two back and was off poorly last time against some of the best runners in the country.

Joint Return has won her share of races in her short career but never against this caliber rival. She was handled by Fortune Pearl last year but she has three races to draw from and will be motoring late.

Here is how the race may unfold. Frivolous should get a jump on the field and be first or second early on. Considering she lost last time, look for Sheer Drama to track closer up this time and not let Frivolous scoot away.

That could open it up for Rosalind. She has trained forwardly for this, showed good energy in the drill a week ago and just might sit an ideal 3-hole trip.
