El Camino Real Derby

About the Race and Track

The $200,000 Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby will be showcased at Golden Gate on Saturday on the Tapeta synthetic surface.

A diverse field of 10 will face the starter.

Last year Tamarando came from dead last in the El Camino Real Derby to get up by a half-length despite racing 5 wide.

The son of Bertrando trained by Jerry Hollendorfer closed into very ordinary splits of :24.40, :49.73 and 1:13.98 set by eventually last-race finisher I’ll Wrap It Up.

The favorite Enterprising was chasing the leader most of the way but was overtaken by Dance With Fate at the top of the lane. That runner tracked just off the pace, pushed to the front in deep stretch, but could not hold off Tamarando.

The winner was timed in 1:51.23 for the 9 furlongs and he earned a 91 Beyer Speed Figure. The 2013 El Camino hero Dice Flavor won the race in 1:51.45 recording an 88 went on to win a Grade 2 on grass later in the year.

A Longshot With Some Value: Indianaugthy

Indianaugthy is lightly raced but his connections would not come across the country unless they had confidence in the runner.

The Pick: Conquest Titan (Win)

Donji, on the rail, is taking a shot here, as he is still a maiden. He has failed multiple times vs. maiden claimers and will be a huge number.

Indianaugthy is an interesting prospect. Trouble in his synthetic debut, he won next in facile manner and was game last out at Gulfstream. Trainer Dale Romans doesn’t ship for the frequent flyer miles.

Metaboss proved he can get this distance last time but it came on grass.

Ernest Shackleton , an Irish import who won his first race in the states recently, will be ridden by Eclipse winner Drayden Van Dyke. All of his races have been on grass so he will have to adapt on the fly.

Cross the Line , who just won the Cal Derby, Harmonic, a recent maiden winner on this surface and Stand and Salute, who won the mile Gold Rush Stakes in the 2014 closer. All will carry the hopes of Hollendorfers into this race.

Soul Drive chased a very nice horse in Bolo two back and was getting to Cross the Line last time. The race over the surface should only help.

Mischief Clem holds the win edge on the field as he brings a 3 for 6 record to the party. He is proven on the synthetic and the runners in the company line last time were spread out, often a good sign.

Conquest Titan , one of the best in Canada last season, will make his seasonal debut under Hall of Famer rider Mike Smith.

He won a Grade 2 and a Grade 3 last year and was also 4th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. In the good hands of Mark Casse, he has fired every single time and can be placed anywhere and still perform. Look for Smith to take a little hold, try to save a bit of ground, angle out at the top of the lane, and blow them away late.
