Empire Classic Betting – Royal Posse Continues Hot Streak

Posted by on 10/23/2015 1:02:30 AM

The non-graded Empire Classic will allow you to do some horse betting the week before the Breeders' Cup kicks off at Keeneland, and this race features a purse of $300,000. That means there will be a few decent horses in this field of thoroughbreds that are three years old and up, and it is run at a distance of 1 1/8 miles on dirt. This will be the 39th running of the event, and it has the highest purse left up for grabs at Belmont Stakes this year.

While you won't get a top-class field with the best of the best shipping to Keeneland this week, there are still a few horses to check out. Royal Posse and Saratoga Snacks went head to head last month and Royal Posse came out on top. He'll do it again as he takes the Empire Classic, which leaves the door open for one more start in 2015.

What: Horse Betting

When: Saturday, October 24th, 2015; post time 2:34 PM ET

Where: Belmont Park, Elmont, NY

Pick: Royal Posse

Beyond Empire has made 15 starts, winning twice in his maiden on his debut and then an allowance race in August 2014. He has finished in the money in his last three starts, but this five-year-old gelding has been inconsistent, even in non-graded stakes races. And when he stepped up to handicap races, Beyond Empire finished ninth in two of them.

Empire Dreams has finished in the money in four of his last five starts, including a win at the non-graded Commentator Handicap in May. He has run the distance three times, including in this race last year in which he finished eighth. This four-year-old gelding has improved, but enough to take the win?

Full Of Mine is still trying to break his maiden, finishing second three times, but he has failed seven times. He hasn't raced since March and has never run more than 1 1/16 miles. This four-year-old colt should be a longshot, but in a field like this, you can get a break or two and end up in the money.

Good Luck Gus has won in two of his last four starts, including at the non-graded Albany in August. That was his first time running at this distance, so that was a good start and this three-year-old should be considered one of the favorites for this race on Saturday, but he'll need a little help.

Johannesburg Smile is reaching the end of the line as an eight-year-old, finishing sixth or worse i three of his last four starts. His last graded-stakes race came in March 2013 and he finished seventh. IT would be a surprise if he even finished in the money.

Royal Posse has won his last two starts, an allowance race in August and the non-graded Evan Shipman in September, and he has made his last three starts at 1 1/8 miles, finishing first or second in all three. This four-year-old might be the best in this field in terms of speed, and at his age, his legs are still there.

Saratoga Snacks finished second to Royal Posse in the aforementioned Evan Shipman and prior to that, he won the non-graded Saginaw in July. This is his fourth start at the Empire Classic, finishing second in 2012, winning in 2013 and fourth last year. This six-year-old still has something left in the tank and it'll be fun to watch another showdown between this horse and Royal Posse.

Sioux finished seventh in this race last year, a run of three races in a row where he has finished fifth or worse. Prior to that, he has won three times, on his second maiden try (he finished third in his debut) and two allowance races. Can he find another gear to get to the winner's circle on Saturday?

Warrioroftheroses finished fourth in an allowance race in July, his best finish since December, and he came in eighth in this race in 2013. He has won a couple of allowance races since then, but it's tough to have any confidence in this six-year-old gelding as he is simply too inconsistent and at this point Warrioroftheroses might simply be past it.

How It Will Play Out

Based on his win at the Evan Shipman, this race should be Royal Posse's to lose, although Saratoga Snacks is going to be in the running for it as well. Place your bets with Royal Posse.
