Garland of Roses Stakes

About the Race and Track

Fillies and mares take the center stage Saturday at Aqueduct as the $100,000 Garland or Roses Stakes is renewed at 6 furlongs.

This is a nice chance for runners that are not top notch to end the season on a winning note. Last year Expression was coming off a second in an optional claimer before coming from fifth to win this race in 1:13.25 with a 77 Beyer Speed Figure.

A Longshot With Some Value: Princess Violet

This miss is fresh, she has the class to be right there if she brings the A game and she has been comfortable with time between races in the past.

The Pick: Room for Me (Win)

Jubilant Vision will break from the rail. She won from the rail in the 2015 debut but it came on the inner strip here and this is an entirely new ballgame. In her last start, she was only a brief factor as the favorite but caved in badly and was claimed. She goes from a 20% barn to a stable that has won only 12 races all year.

Medaglia d’Argento has been crushed in her last 2 stakes attempts. She basically got good for about 3 weeks in the spring but with limited speed, she can also be her own worst enemy.

Nuffsaid Nuffsaid was coming off a 2-month layoff but looked good winning her last scooting away from $40,000 claimers by 11 lengths. Three of her 8 wins have been at the Big A, she has shown the ability to lead or track and still get the job done and she blew out sharply on Monday, which suggests she is feeling pretty good about herself.

Room for Me exits the best race and must be respected off that fact alone. She has always shown a penchant for finding the wire, as she is 8 for 20 in her career. Out in post 12 last time in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint and she lost her best chance when breaking slowly. This mare was Grade 1 placed in the summer, has taken multiple stakes in her career and she worked quickly on Sunday keeping her right on her toes.

La Madrina is back at her best distance today after cutting back from a route. Her trainer Shug McGaughey is solid with this kind of move as he is 23% in the last year with cut back runners. With her style, she will need plenty of help up front and she has to find a way to beat Room for Me as that runner beat her in May.

Princess Violet has been away since June but she is proven off the layoff. She showed her class winning the Grade 1 Madison this spring and this rider, J. Alvarado, was aloft. In the good hands of Mike Hushion, she has trained like the proverbial Swiss clock for this and should give a very good account of herself.

Classic Point should be fit enough now with a pair of races under her girth. In her only local race, she excelled taking the Grade 3 Go for Wand with a 96 Beyer Speed Figure. Trained by James Jerkens, the son of legend Allen, this miss posted a best of 33 best of the morning drill last Monday.

They had better clear out a spot for Room for Me in the winner’s circle. If she can repeat her effort in September, she will be a handful. In that race, the winner repeated and the place horse cashed next out. Her tactical speed will give her first run on the deep closers and would not be shocked if her rider I. Ortiz, guns hard and tries to steal the race.
