About the Race and Track

Santa Anita

First run in 1938 at Hollywood Park, the Gold Cup was moved to Santa Anita in 2014 after the Inglewood venue was shut down. Run at the classic distance of a mile and a quarter, this race has won by some flat-out legends of the game over the decades.

The resilient Seabiscuit won the inaugural Gold Cup, Citation won the race in 1951 when he became a millionaire, Gallant Man took the 1958 renewal and the great Native Diver owned the race from 1965 to 1967.

Exceller and Affirmed won in consecutive years, Derby winner Ferdinand took the 1987 event and Cigar was the hero in 1995.

Lava Man matched the Native Diver feat winning 3 consecutive years and last year Sean McCarthy saddled Majestic Harbor to victory in this fixture.

A Longshot With Some Value: Hard Aces

This runner needed the last, drilled solidly this month, and should be rolling hard late.

The Pick: Hoppertunity (Win)

Hoppertunity proved his class taking the Grade 2 San Pasqual before his third in the Foster. While Catch a Flight beat speedball Moreno and Hard Aces last time in the Californian.

Hoppertunity was good enough to run 2nd in California Chrome in the SA Derby and he is a proven Grade 1 winner.

John Sadler’s student Hard Aces should be a handful.

Hard Aces , who finished third wearing blinkers for the first time in the Grade I Californian Stakes on May 30, worked six furlongs at Santa Anita Sunday in 1:13 for next Saturday’s Grade I, $500,000 Gold Cup at Santa Anita. His trainer was somewhat pleased: Sadler. “He galloped out (seven furlongs) in (one) 26. It was a good last work before the Gold Cup. He went in company (with winner Native Ride, 1:13.60) and looked good. He’s not a particularly fast work horse, but for him, it was a real nice work.”

Big Cazanova brings speed to the party and he is a Grade 3 winner.

Finnegans Wake has been turf only but he is a serious horse. He is a Grade 1 winner at a mile and a quarter on grass and the veteran has a solid late kick. This is a tough runner to take a swing on unless the price is right. He could be left with a ton of work to do late, but the pace should be right. This is not an impossible task.

Lideris is proven at this distance but has never won in the states.

Majestic City relished the off going in Texas in his last race but he will be hard pressed to out gun Moreno early on.

Batti Man has speed but was crushed in the last stakes attempt.

Poshkey has 2 races to draw from but has never won at Anita and was just beaten by Motown Men.

Those that have soul can hang their hat on Motown Men. This runner has been versatile enough to win on the front end or from mid-pack and options are always a plus.

If Hopportunity brings his A game, the rest are running for second.
