Holy Bull Stakes Betting – Upstart Rolls To Big Holy Bull Victory

Posted by on 1/20/2015 10:39:29 PM

The Grade-2 Holy Bull Stakes features a purse of $400,000, and it is run over 1 1/16 miles on a dirt surface. It is for three-year-olds specifically, and this race at Gulfstream Park is very important for those looking at the Triple Crown races.

There are a lot of talented colts in this field, but look for Upstart to show and prove en route to a huge victory on Saturday in Florida.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, January 24th, post time TBA

Where : Gulfstream Park, Hallandale Beach, FL

Pick : Upstart

Bluegrass Singer has won his last two starts, including the non-graded Mucho Macho Man Stakes to kick off 2015, but this will be his biggest test yet. This gelding has never run longer than a mile, so that’ll be something to keep an eye on. He is also entered in the Grade-3 Hutcheson Stakes at Gulfstream Park later that day, so Bluegrass Singer has options going into Saturday; confirm that he’ll be in the lineup before betting on him in the Holy Bull.

Decision Day broke his maiden on his second attempt in October, but that was October and he hasn’t raced since then. That isn’t encouraging for those looking to bet on Decision Day, who has also never run on dirt as both of his maiden attempts were on a synthetic surface and he has only run a mile and 70 yards. There are lots of question to be asked of this Canadian colt.

Dom The Bomb wrapped up 2014 with back-to-back wins at the non-graded Sun Power and Jim Edgar Illinois Futurity, but this is his graded-stakes debut, so we’ll see what this colt is really made of. At least he has run three races on dirt, and his win at the Jim Edgar came at 1 1/16 miles, so that is a start.

First Down broke his maiden on his first try, then finished fourth at the Grade-2 Nashua in November. He has been on the sidelines since then, so this will be a major test for First Down, who hasn’t run more than a mile, but he has plenty of potential and a fantastic pedigree: First Down is the son of Street Sense, which won the 2007 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

Frammento might be a longshot in a strong field, but there is some speed there. He did need two tries to break his maiden, and he has finished second and fourth in two allowance races. He has run all four starts on dirt and at the distance of 1 1/16 miles on two occasions, so he might be worth taking a small flier on.

Frosted probably comes into this race as the favorite with a win and three second-place finishes. However, he needed three tries to break his maiden and he finished second at the Grade-2 Remsen. This is a better chance to see what this colt is really made of, and a win here would put him in the top tier of three-year-olds.

High Noon Rider finally broke his maiden, but his trio of attempts have been the only time we’ve seen him on the race track, and he has never run more than a mile. It is slightly encouraging that he won on dirt after struggling on synthetic, but it’ll take a good performance to make people sweet on High Noon Rider, which isn’t to say it’s not possible.

Juan And Bina has gotten worse in terms of results, and that is never a good thing. After breaking his maiden on his first try, he then finished second at the non-graded Smooth Air Stakes and then fifth at the Mucho Macho Man Stakes, so he badly needs a good performance to at least earn another chance at a graded-stakes event.

Keen Ice is coming off a third-place result at the Remsen, which followed a fifth at the Grade-1 Breeders’ Futurity. He did break his maiden on the first try and his performance at the Remsen was intriguing, but this will be the race that decides which path Keen Ice will go down as a three-year-old.

Upstart should be running near the front after breaking his maiden on the first try, then he won the non-graded Funny Cide. He followed that with a second at the Grade-1 Champagne and a third at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, so he has gone up against some great fields and done alright. Keep a close eye on this colt in 2015.

How It Will Play Out

Frosted will be a popular pick, but Upstart could offer some decent value and should end up in the winner’s circle on Saturday.
