Juvenile Fillies Turf Preview

Posted by on 9/14/2015 11:43:56 PM

Some handicappers love betting on juveniles as they can often just run as fast as they can and the best horses tends to win but add a factor like grass, to possible a new distance, a new surface and the toughest foes around and these are the issues that make the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at a mile a very challenging test for all.

If Acapulco shows up at Keeneland for this race, pay strict attention. She was dead short in her racing debut on dirt in May but then shipped across the pond to race in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Ascot.

She was prominent early and ended up beating 19 rivals as the chalk. This miss came back on August 21 in the Group 1Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York and she chased the leader early, had to settle for second behind Mecca’s Angel, but in the process was in front of 17 rivals when the smoke cleared.

Trained by Wesley Ward, who has a great gift with young horses, Acapulco is out of a winning dam and the dam is kin to Grade 1 winner Mast Track, an over $925,000 earner.

Amira J has only run twice but she won her debut and then had to settle for second in a Woodbine event.

The clever connections of Illuminate thought enough of her to try a Group 3 event in her debut and she sure didn’t disappoint. The daughter of Zoffany was steadied early, settled and then won the 6-furlong event at Ascot over 17 foes.

Harmonize will carry the American hopes if she shows up. Trained by Bill Mott, this filly lost a heart breaker in her debut by a nose but got revenge next time in the P.G. Johnson Stakes when she controlled the pace and the outcome with an 82 Beyer Speed Figure.

Jakaby Jade lost all chance when she dwelt in her debut but then she overcame a slow start to win her next race sprinting in England. Shipped toDel Mar and in the hands of Doug O’Neill, this miss came from third to last to win theJuvenile Fillies Turf. Her dam was unraced but if you go deep into the pedigree the class is there in the form of Mutaman, a Grade 1 winner and over $1.3 million earner.

The Natalma Stakes was also run last Saturday September 12 at Woodbine the Mark Casse student Catch a Glimpse took them flagfall to that’s all. The filly posted legit splits of :23.63, :47.57, 1:12.11 before getting the mile in 1:35.95.

The blood is there for her to thrive too as her dam was a double stakes winner and dam also dropped triple stakes winner and over $450,000 earner Old Forester.

Face it; Europeans that comes over for the Juvenile Fillies Turf must be given an extra long look. In 2013 Chriselliam was coming off a win in the Group 1 Shadwell Fillies Mile at Newmarket before her stateside debut at Santa Anita and she didn’t disappoint.

In 2013, the runner that was coming out of the Natalma and raced in the Juvenile Fillies Turf was Ready to Act. The filly had a 2-length lead at the top of the lane in the Natalma but then ducked out and dropped her rider and then disappointed again in the Juvenile Fillies Turf when a press and fade 6th at 11-1.

Respect anything that Chad Brown saddles for this race. He trained the inaugural winners of this race Maram and he also saddled last year’s heroine Lady Eli.
