Kentucky Downs Turf Cup

About the Race and Track

With $600,000 on the line, horses have come from near and far for the Grade 3 Kentucky Downs Turf Cup at a mile and a half Saturday and only the strong will survive when it is said and done.

The Windy City is represented, beach goers from Del Mar are here, Big Apple players have made the journey and a Kentuckian or 2 is around for the money too.

Kentucky Downs is located at the border of Kentucky and Tennessee and the entire racing at the track is on grass. The grass course is about a mile and 3 eighths with 3 turns. There are only 2 tracks in America, this one and Santa Anita, which utilize a right turn.

A Longshot With Some Value: Bailoutbobby

Trained by Doug O’Neill, who knows about a good horse, Bailoutbobby has a nice late kick and Jimmy Graham got a chance to figure him out last time.

The Pick: Ben’s Cat Hyper (Win)

Az Ridge will bust from the rail. He has speed, doesn’t need the lead to win but stopped badly in his last race, also a Grade 3 at Arlington Park when he was 10-1.

Hyper is trying to make that long road back to respectability. A Grade 2 winner back in 2013, the 8-year-old took the entire 2014 season off and is 0 for 4 this year. That’s the bad news. The good news is he takes breakfast at the barn of Chad Brown, a 26% conditioner.

Dramedy can step up to the plate and knock it over the fence on his best day. He won a Grade 2 in April, tired in his effort two races back and was bothered early last time at Saratoga.

Bailoutbobby has not won in about 10 months and that victory was in an optional claimer. He was totally overmatched by Beholder in the Pacific Classic last time and he has never traveled this far. He was flattered when the horse that just beat him took a Grade 2 next out.

Tobias seems to be barking up the wrong tree. He has lost 14 straight times and even failed when up for sale in a $16,000 maiden claimer. He just doesn’t belong.

Captain Dixie is a nice horse. He has been in the exacta in 7 of 12, was stakes placed last year but his last win was all out by a nose against first step allowance rivals.

Da Big Hoss may live up to his namesake someday, just not sure it will be today. He got a nice confidence builder last time winning a $100,000 race at Saratoga and he cashed in half of his 12 starts.

Mygalsal has a spotty race record and that is a concern. He was beaten 27 lengths in his last Graded attempt and Captain Dixie handled him easily in June.

Roman Approval was beaten a neck in a Grade 3 in July and was flattered when the winner of that race, The Pizza Man, delivered a hot pie to his rivals next out in the Arlington Million.

Power Ped was placed 2nd in a Grade 2 this winter, has 3 decent Del Mar races to draw from and has the clever connections of Neil Drysdale and Flavien Prat.

St. Albans Bay is in a major funk. He has lost 5 in a row and the last was in optional claiming land.

Quiet Force is a reformed claimer that can be placed anywhere and still win. After winning a Grade 3 in Chicago, he may not have cared for the yielding course in his last effort.

O’Prado Ole was 4th in this race last year. He will have to draw into the race but basically got good for about a month back in 2013 when he won back-to-back races. He’ll be in the picture late if at all.

Hyper gets the nod in a tough race. He has the class and is overdue to hit pay dirt.
