Lecomte Stakes

About the Race and Track

A divergent group of 11 sophomore will be taking a first step on the Triple Crown Trail in the Grade 3 mile and 70 yard $200, 000 Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds Saturday and this race will help handicappers to begin to separate the pretenders and the contenders moving forward.

The winner of the race will earn 10 points to qualifying for the Kentucky Derby.

Some quality runners have won the this race over the decades like No Le Hace, Linkage, Hard Spun and Ron the Greek.

In 2013 Oxbow won this race after running a well-beaten 4th in the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity. He made the lead going 48 and change, opened up 3 at the top of the lane and cruised home to by win by 11 and a half lengths with a 93 Beyer and he proved it was not a mirage as he also won the Preakness.

Last year Vicar’s In Trouble parlayed a 13-length maiden victory to a win in the Lecomte when he sat second early behind a 1:13.11 pace before drawing off to win by nearly 7 lengths with a 97 Beyer Speed Figure.

A Longshot With Some Value: War Story

This runner is trained by Tom Amoss and he does not put his horses in impossible spots. He has done nothing wrong and just may make it 3 in a row.

The Pick: Eagle (Win)

International Star will break from the rail. He was Grade 2 place last year at Saratoga and he was inching toward the winner in his last effort.

Tiznow R J is coming off a similar maiden victory that Vicar’s In Trouble used as a springboard last year. He has fired in all 3 of his starts.

Four Leaf Chief is 3 for 5 career but will have to prove he can beat a quality group that are not Louisiana-breds.

War Story is unbeaten in 2 starts and has the confidence of winning over this surface.

Hero of Humor will need a turn around race. He has just won once sprinting and has stopped badly in his 2 stakes attempts.

Savor Stomp is cut out to be a nice horse, he cost nearly $900,000 but after graduating, he lost ground late in his other 2 starts.

Runhappy ran like his name suggests in his debut controlling the pace and the outcome to win by over 8 lengths.

Killingit tried the synthetic surface last time but it didn’t pan out and he was troubled. He has a right to grow into his skin as his sibling Frost Giant won the Grade 1 Suburban on his way to winning over $450,000.

Dekabrist burst onto the scene with 2 straight wins but has now lost 7 in a row.

Another Lemon Drop proved he could handle the off going last time and he extended like he is improving.

Eagle is hung out to in post 11 and that’s a concern. History does not look kind on this post. The 11 slot going a mile and a 70 yards at this track is only 3 for 97 in the last 5 years. On the other hand, post position 12 is about a 10% proposition under the same circumstances.

Eagle did finish third in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes when beaten by El Kabeir, who returned to win the Jerome at the Big A last week.

Look for rider B.J. Hernandez to take a hold early, try to get over and save ground and then make the winning run.
