Pacific Classic Stakes Betting – Beholder Gets Into The History Books

Posted by on 8/19/2015 9:38:18 PM

The Pacific Classic Stakes is a Grade-1 race that is for horses three years old and up, and it carries a guaranteed purse of $1,000,000. It is run on dirt of 1 1/4 miles, and the winner automatically gets a spot in the Breeders' Cup Classic this year.

There has never been a filly in the winner's circle at the Pacific Classic Stakes, but there has been a Triple Crown winner this year, so let's go with Beholder to pull off the win at Del Mar this Saturday.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, August 22nd, 2015; post time TBA

Where : Del Mar Racetrack, Del Mar, CA

Pick : Beholder

Bailoutbobby has made three graded-stakes starts in 2015, finishing second twice, along with an eighth, which might put some off. But he has never run a Grade-1 race and has only moved over to dirt after spending most of his career on turf or synthetic, so he'll be a longshot this weekend.

Bayern hasn't won since the Breeders' Cup Classic last year as a three-year-old, and only once in three races this year has he finished in the money. On his best day, Bayern can run with any horse, but he is wildly inconsistent.

Beholder might be favored here as she tries to be the first mare to win the Pacific Classic as she comes in with a fantastic resume. In 12 graded-stakes races, she has eight wins, including two at the Breeders' Cup and she is coming off a rout at the Grade-1 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes at the beginning of the month. This five-year-old mare could make history this weekend.

Catch A Flight won the Grade-2 San Diego Handicap in July and has won five of eight starts overall, finishing in the money in all eight as well. For a horse that started racing this year at five years old, Catch A Flight has been one of the better horses in 2015 and should be one to watch.

Class Leader has two graded-stakes starts in 14 overall, and hasn't finished in the money in either. He has three wins, in his maiden on his second try, an allowance race and the non-graded Sir Barton. This field is probably too much for this four-year-old to handle.

Effinex is coming off a win at the Grade-2 Suburban Handicap and he has now won three of his last four. However, there is an 11th-place run from the Grade-2 Brooklyn Handicap that is worrying, and the four-year-old might offer some good value to finish in the money at the very least.

Hard Aces won the Grade-1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita against a very good field in June and has been rested since, but it was his first win since January and his first overall in a graded-stakes event. Was that a flash in the pan or is this five-year-old the real deal? We will see on Saturday.

Hoppertunity has been around the front in all five races in 2014, winning the Grade-2 San Pasqual in January, then finishing in the money in three more graded-stakes races (including second behind Hard Aces at the Gold Cup) and then fourth at the San Diego. In 12 starts overall, he has finished out of the money three times, so he could be a threat at Del Mar.

Imperative finished second to Moreno at the Grade-2 Charles Town Classic in his last start, but that was his first finish in the money since last August in this race, so maybe this five-year-old gelding will get some good feelings from this track; it's unlikely, but it could happen.

Midnight Storm has three graded-stakes starts, with a win at the Grade-2 Del Mar Derby last year and then a second at the Grade-2 Shoemaker Mile in June. However, he finished fifth at the Grade-1 Eddie Read Handicap in July and he is closer to that horse than the one that was victorious last summer at Del Mar.

Red Vine rounds out the field and he'll be a longshot after finishing second at the Grade-3 Salvator Mile in July. However, that was his first graded-stakes race in 16 overall, and he has run just three races on dirt; don't expect much from this five-year-old.

How It Will Play Out

It has been a year for making history on the race track, so go with Beholder to become the first filly to win the Pacific Classic.
