Parx Dash Handicap

About the Race and Track

Santa Anita

With a paucity of Grade 1 or Grade 2 races around the country this weekend, let’s take a look at the Grade 3 $200,000 Parx Dash Handicap at Parx Racing.

The race will be carded at 5 furlongs on the turf and a full field of 11 will face the starter.

Parx Racing , just outside of Philadelphia, has been named a few different things in history. Originally it was Keystone Racetrack and replaced Liberty Bell Racetrack, a venue that I visited many times.

Over the decades, some superstars raced here including Spectacular Bid, Revidere, Summer Squall and Broad Brush.

Being within the vicinity of many tracks in the East, shippers are always welcome at Parx.

A Longshot With Some Value: Power Alert

This runner could be overlooked and he has the speed to succeed.

The Pick: Ben’s Cat (Win)

The obvious place to start is with the runner that will break from post 2. That is a runner named Ben’s Cat and this senior citizen will be trying to win this race for the 4th straight year.

He has been on a run second/win mode for quite some time. It started last October and the runner is coming off a second when beaten a nose May 30 in a $150,000 stakes.

This runner has won 29 of 48 races in his career, has earned over $2.4 million and again is the horse to beat.

Bold Thunder just finished a neck behind Ben’s Cat and he will negotiate from the rail.

Ancil has only been in the money once since March of last year and will be a price.

Stormy Rocit is coming off a win against a much softer group.

Tightend Touchdown can handle this distance but has blanked at this track.

Mongol Bull is a nice horse and comes off a return victory at Churchill but it was against an optional claiming field.

A Fleet Attitude and Stormofthecentury are both big numbers and have their work cut out.

Power Alert is an interesting entrant. He won several solid races Down Under in Australia, is three for 4 in this country and is coming off a 4th when dueled into submission at Belmont. This runner set a course record for 5 furlongs 2 starts ago and could upset the apple cart.

Amelia’s Wild Ride has speed but doesn’t need the lead to win. He has won 7 of his last 19 races and his trainer Ramon Preciado is popping at a whopping 33%.

Mongolian Saturday will try to feast on this day. He has teased in stakes before but has some things to prove.

Hall of Fame trainer King Leatherbury trains Ben’s Cat. He has managed this runner expertly, catches a field today with plenty of speed to set up his runner’s late kick and the charge kept his legs moving with a drill last Saturday.

Look for Ben’s Cat, who has never been out of the money on this course, to sit 4 or 5 lengths off the pace, settle, try to save ground and then run them all down.
