Penn Mile Stakes Betting - Night Prowler Picks Up A Huge Win

Posted by on 5/28/2015 9:09:10 PM

The Grade-3 Penn Mile Stakes is a $500,000 race held at Penn National, and it is a mile long obviously, run on a turf surface. This race has only been in existence since 2013, so there isn't a lot of history behind it, but it does bring a large purse to the table.

Since it is a mile, it won't be very long, but it will have plenty of excitement and there are a few horses here that could win it. Take Night Prowler to beat the field to the wire.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, May 30th, post time TBA

Where : Penn National, Grantville, PA

Pick : Night Prowler

Comanche's Storm needed five tries to break his maiden, but he did finish fifth at the non-graded English Channel earlier this month, which was his first race outside of Tampa Bay Downs. He'll probably come into this race as an underdog as his handlers try to figure out what to do with him.

Force The Pass broke his maiden on his second try and has since posted a win and a second-place result in two non-graded stakes events as well. This colt could be in line to be a good value pick to finish in the money on Saturday, and he might even win if a few things go his way.

Gallery needed four tries to break his maiden, then he won an allowance race before a fifth in another allowance race, so this is going to be a major step up in competition for this colt. But with two wins and two third-place results, you should keep an eye on Gallery.

Granny's Kitten broke his maiden on his first try and that is very encouraging, but that is his lone competitive start and that was six furlongs long; the Penn Mile is eight furlongs. That was a very promising race, but it was just one, so it's tough to get behind Granny's Kitten.

High Noon Rider has started just one graded-stakes event, where he finished ninth at the Grade-2 Holy Bull in January. He needed three times to break his maiden, then he has a second and a fourth, and he has split his six starts between dirt and turf. High Noon Rider has been inconsistent throughout his short career, so you might want to stay away.

My Point Exactly finished third at the non-graded Tarpon Stakes last month, and he also won the non-graded Sunday Silence on turf over a mile last September. Don't put too much stock in a seventh at the Grade-1 Florida Derby in March as it was his first start since that win, and we should see a much better version of My Point Exactly on Saturday.

Night Prowler has three wins in six starts, including two in Grade-3 events, one of which was 1 1/16 miles long, so over a mile. Both of those wins were on turf, and he also broke his maiden on turf, so Night Prowler would be a very good in-the-money pick.

Ocho Ocho Ocho is coming off a 14th-place finish at the Kentucky Derby and this will be his debut on turf, so even though he has some great results (three wins, one graded-stakes win, a third in a Grade-1 race), how will Ocho Ocho Ocho take to turf?

Papacoolpapacool won the non-graded Pasadena Stakes in March, his second win in a row on turf (although the first was an allowance race), and he has run five of his six starts on turf. However, he has finished fifth and sixth in a pair of graded-stakes starts, so he might not be up to the challenge of running with above-average horses.

Tuba won the non-graded Black Gold in February, but then finished ninth at the Grade-2 American Turf. In four starts that were a mile, he has one win and after that, his best finish is a fourth. He might be more of a sprinter horse, but if you can't go longer than a mile, you're not going to be much of a racing horse.

Woodwin W comes into this race undefeated as he is 4-for-4, including three races on turf, and three that are a mile or longer. That being said, his four starts are a maiden, two allowance races and the non-graded James Murphy, so this might be the biggest race of Woodwin W's career, definitely to date.

How It Will Play Out

Woodwin W is very intriguing, but the pick here is Night Prowler, who has done well against some solid horses and the distance won't be a problem for him.
