About the Race and Track

Pimlico Race Course will be the stage for the 9 and a half-furlong Preakness Stakes Saturday and the top 3 finishers of the Kentucky Derby will be joined by 5 other faces.

The $1.5 million purse will be on the line and the Easterner runners will have to step up.

A Longshot With Some Value: Danzig Moon

This racer has a nice kick, there is plenty of speed to try to collar and the value will be there as he is tabbed at 15-1 on the morning line.

The Pick: American Pharoah (Win)

Bob Baffert’s star American Pharoah will go favored and he drew the rail. Now history is against him somewhat as no rail drawn entrant in the Preakness has hit the exacta since Tabasco Cat won the race in 1994.

He has had good trips but you make your own luck if you have tactical speed; he worked up to the Derby like a flat-out monster and still comes to the 2 nd Jewel relatively fresh with just 3 races this year. The Derby was run in merry-go-round fashion but the track was seemed much more tiring late in the day. In the last 18 years 9 Derby winners succeeded in this race as this runner was the first since Street Sense to win the Derby after an Eclipse Award at 2. He gets his chance to prove he is a super horse.

Dortmund is a classy son of Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown and has brilliant speed but after sustaining the winning streak, he could have topped out, as he could not close the deal at Churchill. He’s in post 2 so Baffert doesn’t have to shuffle around. He acted up a bit behind the starting gate Derby Day and after tossing his head in the starting gate, he broke solidly and note he took the heat of a speed duel in the San Felipe and despite losing a shoe at the start of the SA Derby, he posted his career Beyer. There is stamina in his pedigree as if you go deep into the bloodlines you’ll find Lakeville Miss, who was a champion and she won the CCA Oaks at a mile and a half. Another major player.

Firing Line is on the outside. Consistent and now proven under fire in a super effort in the Derby, this horse should run big. When the horse that was in the post outside of this runner Itsaknockout broke out in the Derby, this racer was right into the pace mix. Going into the first turn in the Derby, rider Gary Stevens kept him several paths outside of the leader and made the eventual winner go even wider in great riding tactics and considering that he could have been tiring because he did not change leads, and was between horses, he ran super. The 6 weeks he had off before the Derby should bring him into this ready primed for another improvement. Firing Line is also fighting a bit of history as the Derby runner-up has not won the Preakness since Prairie Bayou in 1993.

Danzig Moon and Bolo were involved in a bumping incident in a reaction to Mr. Z’s antics and that hindered both of their efforts in the Derby. Not sure he was beating anybody in the lone win as the place horse that day has not raced back but the show horse returned to run 4th beaten over 10 lengths in his next race. Don’t be too harsh about Tampa Bay Derby as he was battling a virus. One can make a case for him to thrive with distance. Although his sire’s lone win was a sprint and dam was a non-winner, his sibling Global Express did win at a mile and a half on grass. Look for him late down the middle of the track.

Good luck and good racing.
