Risen Star Stakes Betting – War Story Shakes Up The Road To The Kentucky Derby

Posted by on 2/18/2015 6:48:14 PM

The Grade-2 Risen Star Stakes is a prep race for the Louisiana Derby, which will lead one horse to the Kentucky Derby in May. This race is 1 1/16 miles long and run on dirt, and with a purse of $400,000, there is plenty of incentive outside of going on to Louisiana.

There are a few interesting options for the Risen Star, but War Story will add some intrigue going into the Louisiana Derby with a somewhat shocking win in New Orleans on Saturday.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, February 21st, post time 5:24 PM ET

Where : Fair Grounds Race Course, New Orleans, LA

Pick : War Story

Big Big Easy is making his graded-stakes debut and just his third start overall after finishing fifth in the non-graded Jean Lafitte in October, so he has been off the track for a while now. This will also be his first time running more than a mile, so you might not want to expect a lot out of this colt.

Bluff needed three tries to break his maiden, and all three came at Fair Grounds, so he'll need the crowd on his side to make a run on Saturday. All of those races were at one mile and 70 yards and two came in January, so he should be ready to go, but in a strong field, Bluff might be in over his head.

Hero Of Humor recently won an allowance race at Fair Grounds, but his top three finishes have come in maiden/allowance races. His lone graded-stakes start came at the Grade-3 Lecomte, where he finished sixth, so Hero Of Humor might have the speed to compete in a field such as this.

Imperia makes his 2015 debut after starting his first three races on turf, racking up a win at the Grade-3 Pilgrim in September, but then he came in 10 th at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf in November. He did manage a solid second-place finish at the Grade-2 Kentucky Jockey Club in his first race on dirt, so that is encouraging for fans and bettors of this colt, which might be the favorite when the odds come out for this race.

International Star should be up there as well after winning the Lecomte, but like Imperia, he is used to turf, which is where he broke his maiden and then finished second at the Grade-2 With Anticipation last March. He won the Grade-3 Grey on a synthetic surface in October, so the speed is there for International Star, which finished ninth at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and then fourth at the Kentucky Jockey Club.

J.S. Bach needed two tries to break his maiden as he heads into his graded-stakes debut, and he won it at 1 1/16 miles, so the distance shouldn't be a problem for this colt. J.S. Bach has to prove he can keep up with the front of the pack, and he could be a darkhorse to watch out for on Saturday.

Keen Ice broke his maiden on his first try, then finished fifth at the Grade-1 Breeders' Futurity, third at the Grade-2 Remsen and then fifth at the Grade-2 Holy Bull to kick off 2015. This colt has plenty of experience in graded-stakes races, which is good to have, but he needs to find an extra gear in order to win this race on the weekend.

St. Joe Bay is an interesting option with five starts, three of which have come in graded-stakes races and all three were on different surfaces as he finished third on a synthetic surface, then fourth on dirt and turf. He has also never run longer than a mile, but he does have a win in a maiden/claiming race and then second at an allowance race in January. No one really knows what to expect of this colt, but he certainly is intriguing.

Tiznow R.J. Needed three tries to break his maiden, then finished third at the Lecomte, matching his results in the first two maiden attempts. He has a knack for being around the front, he just needs to improve on closing. Still, Tiznow R.J. could have some solid value.

War Story could also be a threat after breaking his maiden on his first try, then winning an allowance race before finishing second to International Star at the Lecomte. The speed is there for War Story, but he has never run more than one mile and 70 yards, so he is slowly being worked up to 1 1/16 miles; this will be a huge test for this colt.

How It Will Play Out

International Star and Imperia might be the horses that bettors look at the most, but don't sleep on War Story; an upset is in the cards for Saturday's main event.
