Sam F. Davis Stakes

About the Race and Track

The Sam F. Davis Stakes will be renewed Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs and it is the local prep for the Tampa Bay Derby and it has drawn a full field.

Handicappers may recall that last year the Grade 3, $250,000 mile and a sixteenth race was won by Vinceremos, who was coming off a maiden win, ran next and was 2nd in the Kentucky Derby before finishing 17th in the Kentucky Derby.

A Longshot With Some Value: Crittenden

Crittenden looms the runner that could upset the apple cart if he can transfer his turf form to the dirt.

The Pick: Ocean Knight (Win)

Catalina Red drew the rail and he should be forwardly placed as he goes from a sprint to a route. Not many horses graduate in a stakes but Red did and he proved it was no fluke by winning another stakes here the end of December. He has a right to have a decent career as kin to stakes placed over $150,000 earner Whiskey Bravo.

Royal Son has not exactly been princely as he has never finished first but he was awarded the victory last time when bumped in the lane.

Ami’s Flatter got a feel of the dirt game last time and he was far from disgraced. He won his only other start on the synthetic at Woodbine and he has trained solidly for this.

Crittenden has turned the corner of late but he has to prove he can win on the dirt. He was beaten nearly 18 lengths in his last dirt effort but has thrived once at Tampa. Both of the local wins came on grass. He has a right to grow into his skin as sibling Side Road was Grade 2 placed.

Divining Rod struck gold in his race debut when he controlled the pace and the outcome in a Laurel miler but he was just handled rather easily by Crittenden. There is class on the bottom side as this runner’s dam Precious Kitten won multiple Grade 1s and earned over $1.9 million.

Bandages had a legit excuse in his debut when off slowly and he won his other race going away. This will be his first route. He has to work to match top kin Wayzata Bay, who won a Grade 2 and earned over $700,000.

Brother Bobo failed miserably in his first try routing. There is a half brother in the family that was a star. Kin Ribo Bobo won a number of stakes, cashed 18 times, earned over $800,000.

G Five was green in his debut in New Jersey but has been pretty consistent since.

My Johnny Be Good will have his Chuck Berry fans and he was not disgraced in this other route attempt.

Coomer could not stand up in the off going in his debut but proved he has talent graduating by over 6 lengths. The concern is that it was a maiden claimer.

Ocean Knight was bet like a good thing in his inner strip debut at the Big A and he rallied to win with ease.

Bears Personality took awhile to figure it out but the light seems to have gone on.

This race is wide-open but Ocean Knight has the look of something special. The Kiaran McLaughlin student is bred to run all day being by two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, he won geared down in his only victory and he has trained fast for this.
