Swale Handicap Betting – Daredevil Gets Back On Track At Gulfstream Park

Posted by on 2/26/2015 11:49:59 PM

The Swale Handicap is a Grade-2 event for horses aged three years, and while it isn't an official prep race for the Kentucky Derby, you can find a couple of thoroughbreds with their eye on the big one at Churchill Downs in the field. The purse is set at $200,000, which is still a good haul when you consider it is a week before the Santa Anita Handicap.

This race at Gulfstream Park has a small but competitive field, and there are a handful of horses that bettors will fancy when they go to make their picks. However, Daredevil should be considered a favorite despite an awful performance at the Breeders' Cup, and he'll shake that off en route to a major win at the Swale on Saturday in Florida.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, February 28th, post time TBA

Where : Gulfstream Park, Hallandale, FL

Pick : Daredevil

Daredevil started out of the gate hot by breaking his maiden on his first try, then he won the Grade-1 Champagne in October. However, a poor 11th-place finish at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile forced trainer Todd Pletcher to take a step back with this colt. This will be his first start in 2015, and a solid performance might put him on the road to a bigger Kentucky Derby prep race.

Grand Bili broke his maiden on his first try, but that was his only start so far and it was just at the beginning of February. He doesn't have much experience and he hasn't run more than 5 1/2 furlongs yet, so this will be a good test for this colt, which hails from Canada. He did break his maiden at Gulfstream Park, so that might count for something.

Ready For Rye needed two tries to break his maiden, although he did finish second on his first attempt. He also finished second at the non-graded Spectacular Bid in January, so this gelding is used to running near the front of the pack. He has never run more than six furlongs, so his closing kick will be something to watch. Ready For Rye is certainly an intriguing option for the Swale.

Senor Grits came in fourth in his first maiden attempt, then followed it up with a third at the non-graded James Lewis III, but that was in November and it was his last start. Rust could be a factor for this American colt and it could go either way, but he is surely going to come into the field on Saturday as one of the darkhorses.

Souper Colossal has four wins in five starts, but look at it a little closer. He broke his maiden in his first try, then won the non-graded Tyro and Sapling in August of last year. Then he finished seventh at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, then won the non-graded Texas Glitter on turf earlier this month. Which horse are we going to see on Saturday? Watch for him down the stretch as he has run longer than a mile just once, and that didn't go so well at the Breeders' Cup.

Twotwentyfive A needs a big bounce-back race after finishing 11th at the non-graded Kitten's Joy last month. Granted, that was his first start on turf, but since breaking his maiden on his first try last August and then winning the non-graded Florida Sire Affirmed in September, Twotwentyfive A has three finishes of fourth place, and one in fifth. None of those races were graded-stakes events, so this colt has to step up his game on Saturday.

X Y Jet rounds out the field and he is another interesting option as he has finished second in five of his seven starts, including three times before finally breaking his maiden. Then he finished fourth at the non-graded Buffalo Man last November before a second at the non-graded Pasco just after Christmas, then another runner-up result at the Grade-3 Hutcheson in January. Does he have the speed to seal the deal against a good field? We'll see this weekend.

How It Will Play Out

Daredevil is out to prove that his terrible showing at the Breeders' Cup was more of an anomaly than the norm, and that he is deserving of a spot at Churchill Downs in May or at the very least, a more important prep race on the trail to the Kentucky Derby. Take Daredevil for the win at Gulfstream Park.
