Travers Stakes Betting - American Pharoah Continues His Dominance

Posted by on 8/26/2015 11:32:33 PM

The Travers Stakes has been run since 1964, although there were six years in which it wasn't held. The purse for the race is $1.25 million, so it attracts some of the top three-year-olds in the country, and they'll run 1 1/4 miles on dirt at Saratoga Race Course; three Triple Crown winners have gone on to win the Travers.

American Pharoah will attempt to be the fourth horse after breaking the Triple Crown jinx at the Belmont Stakes, and his entry might even raise the purse to a staggering $1.6 million.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, August 29th, 2015; post time TBA

Where : Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga Springs, NY

Pick : American Pharoah

American Pharoah went on to win the Grade-1 Haskell Invitational at the beginning of the month and has now won eight of nine, and his only loss came in his maiden. This might be his final start until the Breeders' Cup Classic, in which he isn't entered to race in yet, but a win here and he most certainly will.

Frammento hasn't finished in the money in four races, although two of those were the Belmont Stakes and the Kentucky Derby. He has never won a graded-stakes race, so this might be a bit over his head.

Frosted finished two spots ahead of Frammento at the Grade-2 Jim Dandy after finishing second at the Belmont and fourth at the Kentucky Derby, and all that followed a win at the Grade-1 Wood Memorial in April. He has been on quite a run and while he might not win, he'll be in the mix on Saturday.

Keen Ice came in second at the Haskell behind American Pharoah and third at the Belmont, which followed a seventh at Churchill Downs. This is another three-year-old that seems to find his way to the front and he should challenge for a spot in the top three.

King Of New York needed eight tries to break his maiden, then finished first and third in a pair of allowance races before a fourth at the Grade-3 American Derby and a third at the non-graded Curlin'. This is definitely out of his reach unless something crazy happens, and finishing in the money would be a huge accomplishment.

Mid Ocean hasn't broken his maiden in five races, although he has improved since starting off with a pair of tenth-place runs. He'll be far out of his element on Saturday and not finishing last will be a big thing for him.

Smart Transition won the Curlin' after finishing fourth at the Grade-3 Dwyer in his graded-stakes debut, and while he has finished in the money in four of his six starts, this is by far his biggest test to date and needing three tries to break your maiden isn't encouraging.

Tale Of Verve has had a wild career as he went to needing six tries to break his maiden to finishing second at the Preakness to American Pharoah, then seventh at the Belmont, which is still very respectable. Then he came back to earth with a sixth at the Grade-2 West Virginia Derby, so which version of Tale Of Verve is going to show up on Saturday?

Texas Red won the Jim Dandy after finishing second at the Dwyer and the Grade-2 San Vicente. He also won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last year and is starting to fulfill his high expectations, but it's a little strange that he wasn't in any of the Triple Crown races, unless he was hurt for five months between February at the San Vicente and July at the Dwyer.

Upstart was rolling in his career as he finished in the money in his first seven starts, including a win at the Grade-2 Holy Bull and a third at the Juvenile, but then he finished 18th at the Kentucky Derby. He did, however, recover for a solid third-place run at the Haskell, so hopefully we'll see that horse instead of the one we saw at Churchill Downs in May.

How It Will Play Out

There are some very good horses in this field, but how can you pick against American Pharoah after the year that he has had? What's more is that he didn't look rusty at all after two months between the Belmont and the Haskell, and he could be in the midst of an incredible run, which we should all enjoy. Take the Triple Crown winner.
