Treasure Chest Stakes

About the Race and Track

Many jurisdictions around the country showcase their state-bred stars throughout the year and Delta Downs is up to the plate Saturday with several events for runners that were born in the Bayou.

The Treasure Chest Stakes puts fillies and mares at 6 furlongs aiming for a $200,000 purse and there is a short and sweet group of contenders to evaluate.

The winner of this race last year, Four Leaf Chief, was coming off a loss with a 51 Beyer Speed Figure but he settled early in this event, was within a neck of the lead at the top of the lane and drew off to win by over 4 lengths with a 71 Beyer.

A Longshot With Some Value: Julie’s Jewelry

This flashy runner has been in the exacta in 4 of 6 this year and she figures to get a clear lead. From there, it’s just a matter if she can pull off a theft.

The Pick: Kyriaki (Win)

Walk of Stars was game in the win last time and like fact runners in the company line were clear. The winner of the June 12 race repeated in a state-bred NC allowance, lost next several. The freshening could very well help her and note she freaked by over 30 in the return effort for the diploma. She'll be sent along but there are others here with designs on the top.

Diva’s Diamond has talent. The race that screams off the page is the day she gave monster Untapable fits in the Apple Blossom. The June 26 show horse won twice since, the last in a state-bred $131K stakes at Remington with an 82 Beyer. This miss has won off the layoff in the past and was totally overmatched last time when beaten by the $950K earner. Toss anything from a 39% barn at your own risk.

Haunted Heroine’s tactical speed will likely give her first run on the deep closers. Outside of the Bayakoa, this is her toughest test yet. She did come from slightly off the pace 2 back and that may have to be the ticket here if Julie's Jewelry is intent on the lead. She probably needs to improve to get there.

Kyriaki is in from California. The winner of this race last year, Yahilwa, was coming off a win in California in a $62,000 optional with a 95 Beyer and that runner was also out of the money in the Zenyatta. This miss was boosted when the place horse in that last win took the Grade 3 Dogwood next before a press and fade effort in Wavell Avenue's BC Filly and Mare Sprint. Beaten by a champ last time, trainer Pete Eurton does a nice job in California holding his own against some of the best trainers around. The Kentucky Derby winning rider aloft and this one is live.

Half of Private Promise’s wins were local. Note stakes win this year came at 33-1 and she was dismissed on the board last time at 24. She has to do something today she never has done and that is put wins together.

The bling is out, as Julie’s Jewelry must find a way to turn the tables on the rail among others. Far from disgraced in the other stakes run and note show horse was 4 clear that day. Trainer can keep them going good once they are thriving to the tune of 25%. There is a more experienced pilot for this and look for rider to try to utilize filly's :45 and change speed and still this event.

Kyriaki has enough speed to maintain contact, she has been game in her wins this year and she should be a hint of a price.
