Belmont Stakes Betting – American Pharoah Makes Horse-Racing History

Posted by on 6/3/2015 9:19:55 PM

The Belmont Stakes is the final jewel in the Triple Crown, and it is called the “Test Of Champions” because of the 1 1/2-mile distance that will make a horse earn every inch they get at Belmont Park. It is run on dirt and has a purse of $1.5 million, but the stakes are much higher this Saturday.

Many horses have failed to complete the Triple Crown, but American Pharoah looks like he has the stuff to finally get it right and take the first Triple Crown in 37 years. After romping to wins at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, American Pharoah will be out to make history.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, June 6th, post time 6:50 PM ET

Where : Belmont Park, Elmont, NY

Pick : American Pharoah

American Pharoah is the overwhelming favorite as he tries to become the first horse since Affirmed in 1978 to win the Triple Crown. In the first two legs, American Pharoah has blasted the field and the only thing that might be holding him back at Belmont Park is the 1 1/2-mile length, but that will also hurt his competitors. With six wins in seven races (he only failed to break his maiden), American Pharoah has history ahead of him.

Frammento finished 11th at the Kentucky Derby and has just one win in eight starts, and that was breaking his maiden on his second try. He has only finished in the money in three of those starts and it would be a small miracle if he were to beat American Pharoah; it might even be too much to ask of him to finish in the top three.

Frosted could be one of the best bets to beat American Pharoah as he finished fourth at the Kentucky Derby, he has won the Wood Memorial and came in second at the Grade-2 Remsen and Grade-2 Holy Bull. He could challenge the favorite, but it'll take his very best effort to do so.

Keen Ice came in seventh at the Kentucky Derby after finishing fourth at the Grade-2 Louisiana Derby, and he has only one win under his saddle, which was his maiden last September. He has fared pretty well in graded-stakes events with results that vary from third to seventh in six starts, but again, he'll need a top-notch performance to run with American Pharoah.

Madefromlucky won the Grade-2 Peter Pan Stakes, and he has a second at the Grade-2 Rebel Stakes along with a fourth at the Grade-1 Arkansas Derby as well. However, he did need four attempts to break his maiden and while he did win an allowance race, that won't cut it against a horse like American Pharoah.

Materiality had won his first three starts before finishing sixth at the Kentucky Derby, and the speed is definitely there, it's just a matter of whether or not he can keep up over 1 1/2 miles. The rest might help as he has been off since the Derby, but he'll need a lot more than rest to beat American Pharoah. That being said, he could be a very good bet to finish in the money, so keep that in mind.

Mubtaahij did very well in his first American race as the Irish-bred colt finished eighth at the Kentucky Derby, and that should be encouraging for the Belmont, although the Derby was the furthest he has run. It all depends on the closing kick; if he can keep it up down the stretch, Mubtaahij should finish in the money and put himself in position if American Pharoah stumbles.

Tale Of Verve is a very intriguing option as he needed six tries....that's right, break his maiden, and then he finished second to American Pharoah at the Preakness Stakes. That might have been as good as it'll get for Tale Of Verve, but still, it earned him a look at the Belmont and he is now definitely profitable going forward. As for winning the Belmont, that probably isn't an option.

How It Will Play Out

Since Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 1978, a number of horses have won two jewels, and three since 2008 have won the first two legs, only to come up short. However, American Pharoah has absolutely crushed the fields at the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes to get to this point and it would be a massive upset if any horse other than this magical colt wound up in the winner's circle on Saturday. Take American Pharoah.
