Last Tycoon Stakes

About the Race and Track

With limited sophomore stakes action this weekend, let’s go long in the mile and a quarter Last Tycoon Stakes on grass at Santa Anita. The Grade 3 event has enticed 8 runners.

Named for the now deceased 1986 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Last Tycoon and then he stood stud in Ireland and Australia.

Last year Quick Casablanca left his foes in a cloud of dust at 16-1 taking this race by a head under Joe Talamo. And he is back to defend his title.

A Longshot With Some Value: Power Foot

This runner is in the world-class hands of Neil Drysdale and will be ridden by Rafael Bejarano. He has a shot to get an ideal 3-home trip and if he does, he will be a handful.

The Pick: Joes Blazing Aaron (Win)

From the rail out Big John B will be making his first start since running 9th in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. He did win off the layoff last year and he showed his class winning the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap this summer.

Power Foot has won at this demanding distance and he comes off a third in the Grade 2 San Luis Rey Stakes last month.

Ganesh is making his second start in the United Stakes. He was a Group 1 winner in S. America but sometimes it takes runners like this time to acclimate.

Joes Blazing Aaron has blazing speed, has 2 races under his girth now, has won at this distance and has been in the money in all 3 starts at this distance. Tyler Baze will ride him.

Play Hard to Get is ambitiously placed. He was 4th in both of his stakes attempts but is proven at this journey.

The rail rival beat Si Sage this summer and he has never won in this country. Two of his 3 wins have been at a mile and quarter as his trainer Darrell Vienna adds the blinkers today.

Quick Casablanca saved ground from the rail 3 weeks ago in his first race since June. He obviously has a nice turn of late foot as Hall for Famer Gary Stevens takes the reins for this race.

Abbey Vale was beaten a nose at this distance in 2013. He has won 2 of his 3 starts in this country but this is his first Graded attempt.

Six of the 8 runners in this race have limited speed. Abbey Vale came from 8th to win in March and was third beaten a length and a half off the lead last time before he held on by a length while losing ground going 9 furlongs.

Joes Blazing Aaron has made the lead in his last 4 races and in 5 of his last 6 outings. He has commanding speed as he went :45 and change and 1:09 and change when third at this distance two race back. In his win at this distance in New York, the runner got away with a very pedestrian pace.

Tyler Baze is a good judge of pace; if he can slow it down just a little, Joes Blazing Aaron may forget to stop.
