Las Virgines Stakes Betting – Callback Grabs Her First Graded-Stakes Win

Posted by on 1/29/2015 8:23:53 PM

The Las Virgenes Stakes is a Grade-1 event for fillies aged three years as the road to the Kentucky Oaks in May really heats up. There is a purse of $300,000 for this event, which is run over a mile on dirt at Santa Anita Park.

In this prep race for the Kentucky Oaks, look for a filly that has plenty of players excited about her chances as Callback storms to victory to earn her first win in a graded-stakes race,

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, January 31st, post time TBA

Where : Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, CA

Pick : Callback

Achiever’s Legacy is coming off a disappointing fifth at the Grade-1 Starlet Stakes to wrap up 2014, and she now has results of third and fifth when racing on dirt. She has run three surfaces over her first six starts, so this filly is still trying to figure out which surface suits her best.

Callback made her debut at the Grade-2 Santa Ynez at the beginning of January, finishing second. However, she has yet to run a full mile in competitive action as the Santa Ynez was just 6 ½ furlongs, which is just under a mile, so that will be interesting to watch. Still, there are some that consider this Bob Baffert filly to be the favorite on Saturday, and he has won this race three times: 1999 with Excellent Meeting, 2003 with Composure and 2012 with Eden’s Moon.

Glory will be making her debut in this race and it might be a little too much for her to handle, although you never know how a horse will handle until she hits the track. Therefore, there isn’t much information out there for Glory other than she is trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer, who won this race with Blind Luck in 2010. He might need more blind luck on Saturday, although he does have five horses in the field (Achiever’s Legacy is one).

Light The City is another Hollendorfer filly and she might be one of the favorites despite finisging fifth at the Santa Ynez. She broke her maiden on her first try, then won the non-graded Anoakia Stakes in October. In November, Light The City was third at the non-graded Desi Arnaz Stakes and then there was the Santa Ynez. The speed is there for this filly, but she has to be more consistent as a three-year-old.

Lutine Belle has two wins in an allowance race as well as her most recent start at the non-graded Blue Norther. She also finished third at the non-graded Golden Gate Debutante, but a seventh at the Grade-1 Chandelier was a shaky debut and therein lies the problem with starting a horse off in a big graded-stakes race; it might be too much for them. Lutine Belle is yet another Hollendorfer filly in this field.

Majestic Presence is the final Hollendorfer horse in the field and after breaking her maiden on her second attempt, she was thrown into the Chandelier and finished fourth. She followed with a ninth at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, then third at the Grade-3 Delta Princess and finally, a fourth at the Starlet.

Maybelline needed two tries to break her maiden, then she stumbled to an 11th-place finish at the Chandelier. But she bounced back to win an allowance race, followed by a second at the Desi Arnaz and then third at the Starlet and along with Callback, she give Baffert a very good chance of winning this race for the fourth time.

Mio Me failed to break her maiden on her first try in November on turf, and now she is being thrust into the Las Virgenes. Players shouldn’t have high hopes for Mio Me, the first of two Mark Casse fillies in this field and he is known in horse racing circles as a trainer who is good with sprint horses.

Miss Mandate is another Casse-trained filly and she finished eighth at the Delta Princess. After three straight fifth-place finishes (two maiden tries and the non-graded Oak Tree Juvenile Fillies), Miss Mandate broke her maiden, but then struggled at the Delta Princess. This field might be too much for her speed.

Suva Harbor rounds out the field and after finishing second in her first maiden try, she broke it in November and is now on to graded-stakes races. Whether she can keep up to this field is another question, but Suva Harbor is promising and trained by John Sadler, who won this race in 2011 with Zazu.

How It Will Play Out

Callback doesn’t have much experience, but she’ll shoot up the ranks of three-year-old fillies with a big win on Saturday.

Las Virgenes Stakes Betting Pick: Callback
