Den’s Legacy Steps Up In Hot Springs

Posted by Marco Sussman on 4/11/2013 7:25:20 PM

Sports betting sharps are getting closer to the Kentucky Derby, but first they must start at the Grade-1 Arkansas Derby on Saturday in Hot Springs. This should be an entertaining race to check out, and experience should pay off for a winner that could net you a few extra dollars leading into Louisville.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, April 13th, post time TBA
Where: Oaklawn Park Race Track, Hot Springs, AR
Pick: Den’s Legacy

(All participants are listed as probable as of Wednesday, April 10th)

Den’s Legacy is making his way towards Churchill Downs after a third-place result in the Grade-2 Rebel Stakes last month, and he has now finished in the top three in nine of his 11 career starts, including his last seven. He has five graded-stakes starts in a row, so Den’s Legacy is used to the competition, but he also has just one win during that time. Does he have the stuff to seal the deal?

Falling Sky has three wins in five starts, but he is coming off a third-place run in the Grade-2 Tampa Bay Derby in March. In a race filled with excellent horse betting options, Falling Sky could end up being a solid darkhorse to check out on Saturday. This will be the biggest test that this colt has faced yet, but he did fare well in a Grade-2 race; now he just have to move it to a Grade-1 level.

Frac Daddy faded to seventh in the Grade-1 Florida Derby and this is a chance for this thoroughbred to redeem himself after that poor performance. This could be his last chance because Frac Daddy came in sixth in the Grade-3 Holy Bull Stakes, and this run of results has to be worrying to his handlers. If Frac Daddy doesn’t finish in the top three, his path to the Kentucky Derby could end up taking a detour around Churchill Downs.

Heaven’s Runway may be the lowest-rated horse betting option in this field as he ended 2012 with two straight seventh-place finishes, but now he has finished third in his last two starts, including in the Grade-3 Southwest Stakes, which was at Oaklawn Park. This will be a massive step up in competition for Heaven’s Runway, but a win on Saturday would be quite the upset. Still, anything can happen in the world of thoroughbred horse racing.

Oxbow has been up and down throughout his career, but he recently finished second to Will Take Charge at the Rebel Stakes, so hopefully, that version of this colt will be on track on Saturday. He has a very high rating and could even be the horse betting favorite going into this race, but inconsistency is always a tough thing to gauge. Picking Oxbow wouldn’t be a poor pick, but it could backfire as well.

Overanalyze came in fifth at the Grade-3 Gotham Stakes, and like Oxbow, this colt is inconsistent and you never know what you’re going to get. He has three wins in six starts, but he has followed each of those wins with a finish of third or worse, so if patterns mean anything, he could be in line for a victory on Saturday in his first trip to Oaklawn Park. We know the talent is there with Overanalyze, but it’s just a matter of the jockey coaxing it out of him and if he does, that could lead to a win for this colt.

Texas Bling has struggled in his two graded-stakes starts, posting a ninth-place finish in the Southwest Stakes, but he did improve to fourth in the Rebel Stakes, so that is encouraging. Still, Texas Bling may need a couple of breaks in order to get to the finish line first and he has to get out of the gate with a quick start; he can’t afford to fall behind too far.

War Academy has two wins in three starts, but both of those came in allowance or maiden races, and then he finished fourth in the Grade-2 San Vicente. This will be a much larger test for the three-year-old, and if he manages to pull off an upset this weekend, he could be in line for the Kentucky Derby.

How It Will Play Out

Den’s Legacy may not be the most talented horse in the field, but he has a lot of experience and could be ready to take the next step towards the Kentucky Derby. Take him in your online betting picks on Saturday.
