Who: Thoroughbreds – Redeemed, Arthur’s Tale, Cherokee Lord, Blues Street, Tajaaweed
What: Horse Racing Betting Tips – The Discovery Handicap, The River City Handicap
Where: Aqueduct, Churchill Downs
When: Saturday, November 19th

Arthur’s Tale and Cherokee Lord have amassed healthy bankrolls in their relatively brief careers, but both will be seeking their first graded stakes scores on Saturday. Arthur’s Tale must deal with heavy favorite Redeemed in the Grade 3 Discovery Handicap at Aqueduct, and Cherokee Lord will contend with salty turfers like Blues Street and Tajaaweed in the Grade 3 River City Handicap at Churchill Downs. We’ll assess their chances below.

Redeemed (7-5) is certainly a worthy favorite in The Discovery, having knocked off the highly-regarded Prayer for Relief last out in The Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park. Prior to that, he notched a pair of seconds behind Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile participant Wilburn in The Smarty Jones at Parx Racing and Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Caleb’s Posse in the Grade 2 Amsterdam at Saratoga. Regular rider Edgar Prado retains the mount for trainer Rick Dutrow. Still, there’s reason for optimism for backers of $750,000 yearling purchase Arthur’s Tale. The son of Bernardini finished fourth behind a trio of Breeders’ Cup Classic participants last out in the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby, and was coming off a 5 ½-month layoff to boot. He’s sure to be tighter this time around. Also, you’ll note his top Beyer Speed Figure of 94 is just two points shy of Redeemed’s lifetime best. Arthur’s Tale is proven over the Aqueduct main oval, having broken his maiden there last December, several months prior to his narrow loss to Toby’s Corner in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial. Redeemed spots him 5 pounds in The Discovery (121 to 116). I’ll bet on #8-Arthur’s Tale to win at odds of 7-2 or better, and box him in the exacta with #4-Redeemed.

In The River City, Cherokee Lord figures to be third or fourth choice in the vicinity of 6-1. Vying for favoritism will be hard-knockers Blues Street (2-1) and Tajaaweed (9-5). Both have run well on the Churchill sod, but neither has notched a win there. Blues Street’s only win of 2011 came when racing for a tag in an Optional Claiming event at Belmont Park in June. Tajaaweed’s last three victories came over the Arlington grass course, and he failed to fire last out in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland, at odds of 44-1. Cherokee Lord recorded his first stakes score last out in The Remington Green. He stalked the pace and pulled away late. With speed to his inside (#1-Plutonium) and outside (#4-Bergerac and #5-Zimmer), Cherokee Lord could work out a ground-saving, stalking trip in The River City, and get the jump on the aforementioned favorites. I’ll bet on Cherokee Lord to win and place at odds of 9-2 or better.

Those are my horse racing betting tips for the weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling!
