Bet On Breeders’ Cup – Churchill Revisited

bet on breeders cup

This will be the 7th time ever the Breeders’ Cup will be held at Churchill Downs so let’s look back at what happened there just last year to try to get some feel of what may be set to unfold in a few weeks when the BC races are renewed on November 4th and 5th.

In the Marathon last year, Eldaafer was making his Churchill debut, but he turned the hat trick winning his third in a row when getting a nice trip sitting about 4 off the pace early before drawing off late at 10-1.

Woodbine invader More Than Real proved she is the real deal taking the Juvenile Fillies Turf by a diminishing 2 lengths at 13-1. She was coming off a solid second in a Grade 3 and got there for the potent Todd Pletcher/Garrett Gomez duo.

The longshot parade continued in the Filly and Mare Sprint as Dubai Majesty make it 4 for 7 at Churchill when getting an ideal perfect trip from fourth to cash at 8-1.
Finally some semblance of sports betting order was seen when tepid chalk Awesome Feather won the Juveniles Fillies going away at 4-1. She was fresh from winning her first 5 races and when you look back, 4-1 is not bad for a previously unbeaten runner.

The bomb was dropped big time in the Filly and Mare Turf as Edgar Prado got Shared Account up at 46-1 in an 8-horse blanket finish. The filly, which was only 7-2 in her prior race, and was beaten a head in the Grade 1 Diana in July, put trainer Graham Motion on the map. Motion, of course, trained this year’s Derby winner Animal Kingdom.

Unrivaled Belle, who was only out of the exacta once in 11 prior races, took the Ladies Classic for conditioner Bill Mott holding sway under a solid ride by Kent Desormeaux.
On Saturday, for those betting horses, the drama just got more intense.

Pletcher kicked the day off with another winner as Pluck came from dead last at 6-1 to win the Juvenile Turf. Troubled in his first race, he won two of her next 3 and was coming off a Grade 3 win at Woodbine.

Speed was on full display in the Sprint as second choice Big Drama broke sharply from the rail, controlled the pace and outcome to bring back 5-1 under Eibar Coa. He had won a Grade 2 earlier in the year and was cleverly managed by trainer David Fawkes.

Chamberlain Bridge made it back-to-back from the rail as he came from 9th of 14 to win the Turf Sprint at 5 furlongs at a fat 6-1. Hung wide in his prior two races, it was the second win on the BC slate this weekend for Brent Calhoun.

Uncle Mo nailed down champion honors in the Juvenile cashing for the third time without a loss by over 4 lengths while inching away late. He had won his debut by nearly 15 lengths than proved it was no fluke taking the Grade 1 Champagne.

Super horse Goldikova put on the jets just in time to once again win the Mile on the turf as the obvious chalk. It was her third Mile win in a row and she was coming off a Group 1 win at Longchamp.

Online horse betting players who took a shot in the Dirt Mile and got lucky in the minor slots got paid as Dakota Phone came from the clouds and left field to get up by a head at 37-1. A 5 and 9-1 shot completed the trifecta but the payoff was the superfecta as Cool Coal Man held 4th at 33-1. The ‘super’ paid nearly $37,000.

Phone had never been a win machine but he did take the Grade 2 San Diego and was a good third in the Pacific Classic.

European interloper Dangerous Midge, who was the 5th choice in the 7-horse field, succeeded in the Turf under another masterful ride by Frankie Dettori. Midge had won half of his 10 races, was coming off a Group 3 win and obviously enjoyed the fresh Lasix and blinkers.

The granddaddy of them all, the Classic, was an instant blockbuster. Zenyatta was seeking her 20th consecutive win and she got her usual dead last trip early. She didn’t break sharply, was forced to steady briefly but still looked able to catch Blame at the wire. But it wasn’t to be.

She was 2 lengths behind at the top of the lane and although she just failed to get up by a head, you have to give Blame his props. He was not backing down and he was not giving up.

The fairy tale had ended.

Try to visualize what some of these runners had going for them and project it to this year’s Cup.
Much more to come in future weeks.
