Betting On Kentucky Derby - Death, Taxes, And Calvin Borel

betting on kentucky derby

There are very few online sports betting constants in this world especially as far as betting horses is concerned except for the fact that Calvin Borel rides Churchill Downs as well as any rider in the country.

He has been aboard the online betting for Kentucky Derby winners in 3 of the last 4 years and has now secured his mount, Twice the Appeal.

Borel is one of 5 riders in history to win the Derby in consecutive year and he will be trying to re-write the records books this year as no pilot has ever won three Derbies in a row.

A son of Successful Appeal, Twice the Appeal was a bargain purchase of $35,000 last year and he had his coming out party taking the Grade 3 Sunland Derby. He picked up a cool $400,000 for the win and that gave him a shot for Derby glory as he moved up the Graded earnings table.

The colt had some rough trips early in the year and his connections took a shot and entered him in a maiden claimer. They all held their collective breath as he was not claimed and since that race, he’s run three excellent races in a row.

This runner was a late foal and was not rushed with but he clearly has thrived routing and the way he just won at 9 furlongs suggest he will enjoy the classic distance.

Twice the Appeal’s pedigree also indicates he has a legit chance to get a mile and a quarter. His stakes winning sibling Board Eligible earned nearly $450K and she was a stakes winner at 9 furlongs when a drawing away winner.

For those that believe in déjà vu, the Kentucky Derby betting phenomenon could be in effect this season.

Two years ago Borel succeeded with Mine That Bird and that runner also prepped at Sunland Park. With a projected hot pace in store for the Derby, don’t be shocked if Twice the Appeal will be picking them up and laying them down in the drive.

In other Derby happenings, the likely favorite Dialed In worked last week at Palm Meadows. He was clocked in :48. 2/5 for the 4-furlong drill and galloped out in 1:01 2/5.

This is what his trainer Nick Zito said about the work: “This is what I wanted…those 12s. This horse is very rippled. This horse is very ready. I can guarantee this horse is not going to be short. I can’t guarantee anything else, but I’ll tell you he won’t be short. We know the kind of horse he is. Any horse that gives you the last eighth in :11 and change…I don’t know what else he can give you? The horse is happy here. He likes the track.”

Dialed In proved his affinity for Churchill in his debut when he came from third to last to win at first asking going 6 and a half furlongs in 1:17.77.

He has posted three 90-plus Beyers since and he is in the right hands as Zito has had success in the Derby twice. One could easily envision a trip for him that sees him far back saving ground early, then picking them off one by one in the final 2 furlongs.

Stay tuned.
