What: Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic Preview

Where: Churchill Downs

When: Friday, November 4th

Connections of Havre de Grace entered this race but are more likely to shoot for all the money in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. If she does go in this Breeder’s Cup betting race, she will be the prohibitive chalk but for out purposes, we will count her out of this race.

The Ladies Classic, the pinnacle event on the Friday card, will open up big time if Grace goes in the BC Classic. The best older distaffers in the world will try to be the fastest to run the 9 furlongs on the main track for a purse of $2 million.

Trainer Bill Mott is hoping for that online betting déjà vu feeling as he will send out Royal Delta attempting to win this race in consecutive years. Last season his student Unbridled Belle parlayed a disappointing second in the Grade 1 Beldame to a handy win the Ladies Classic when holding together by just under two lengths with a 104 Beyer.

Delta has only run one poor race in her life and it was a wide effort in her first vs. winners. She also is coming off a second in the Beldame but she won the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes by 2 1/2 lengths in the sprint, and she captured the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes by 5 1/2 lengths at Saratoga.

The other sports betting entrants in this race will not be bit players.

The first two finishers in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign, Ask the Moon and Pachattack will not give an inch. The Alabama second It’s Tricky adds intrigue to the race along with Alabama fourth Plum Pretty, who is coming to the race right.

Just like in life, timing is everything in race and Plum Pretty is fresh from a smasher. The Bob Baffert trainee brings sub :45 speed to the party, is proven at Churchill since she took the Kentucky Oaks there in May and posted a career 108 Beyer running away with the Grade 2 Cotillion in Philly to kick off October.

Aruna will try to do something she never has in the Ladies Classic and that’s win on conventional dirt but the distance could be much more suited to her style.

This gal proved her class winning a Grade 2 at Churchill last year and made a incredible looping move to reach the lead and hold it in her last race, the October 9 Grade 1 Spinster on the Polytrack at Keeneland. She is extremely consistent and know this: she has every right in the world to adore the dirt as her dam, Surya, not only won half of her 10 starts including a Grade 2 but she freaked by over 9 lengths going 9 furlongs at Saratoga in 2002.

Ultra Blend will rate an upset glance in this race and she has to seriously be considered in the gimmicks. She has been in the exacta in 17 of 24 with 11 wins and has won nearly $900,000 in her career. She toiled early in her life with California-bred rivals but has a nice turn of late foot and has not been out of the money all year. She is proven on dirt and left her credentials on the track taking the Grade 1 Hirsch in August. With a hot pace, she’ll be picking them up with ease.
