  • What: Breeders’ Cup Sprint Preview
  • Where: Churchill Downs
  • When: Saturday, November 5th

The fastest horses in world will be going three quarters of a mile with $1.5 million on the line in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and there is no sports betting room for a slow break, a traffic jam or a misstep at the very wrong time.

The first logical place to start is last year’s Breeder’s Cup betting winner, Big Drama. But the David Fawkes student had to scratch recently from the Vosburgh after developing a fever. He should have enough time to recover before the big possible payday but you never want to come to a pinnacle test when not exactly feeling 110%. If he brings the A game, like he did in his 2011 opener when posting a 120 Beyer winning a Grade 3 at Gulfstream, he will be a handful.

Fawkes also has Apriority set for the Sprint. He only raced once at Churchill but was a tough beat loser going 7 furlongs. It took this guy awhile to figure it out, but he just might sit a nice stalk and pounce trip.

Trainer Bob Baffert entered two for the Sprint. His student Euroears took the Grade 1 Bing Crosby at Del Mar at the end of July and was totally compromised by the mud in the Vosburgh. The very quick The Factor won the Grade 1 Pat O’Brien at the beach the end of August but the latter is more likely to go in the Dirt Mile.

If Caleb’s Posse decides on this race, he will need plenty of help on the front end since he is cutting back in distance. He won his last sprint, the Grade 1 Kings Bishop, but he was two and a half lengths off the lead at the 6-furlong marker.

Force Freeze has raced twice in the states, both with 100 Beyers or more. He sat off a crazy :43 3/5 half in his bow in this country at the shore and then came away late. This guy just got beat by Giant Ryan, but he rates an online betting sites upset glance.

Ryan just invents ways to win. He’s 6 for 8 this year and he moves up big time in the off going. His best asset may be the fact he has speed but he can sit just off the pace and still perform.

After running second in this race last year at 23-1, Hamazing Destiny has blanked this year. He has been in the exacta in 4 of 5 at Churchill and that is where backers have to hang their hat.

Aikenite took a Grade 2 at Churchill in May but has not been able to close the deal since.

The California king coming into the Sprint could very well be Amazombie, trained by the much-underrated Bill Spawr.

This Cal-bred has won 8 of his last 17 races, can sit close to the pace or come from mid-pack and he comes to the race fresh off the Grade 1 Ancient Title win just over a month ago.

Jackson Bend will likely go in the Dirt Mile but if he shows in the Sprint, he’ll be a late factor if one at all.

The Sprint has had more winners paying $20 or more than any race on the BC card. Going into this season, 13 of the 27 Sprint winners paid 9-1 or more so don’t be afraid to shoot for the moon here.
