SPEED ON GRASS

Posted by on 2/5/2014 4:59:07 AM

Online sports betting site players will be treated to a unique sprint on turf at Santa Anita in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint this year as the race will be staged on the tricky downhill course in Arcadia at about 6 and a half furlongs.

The course features the only right-hand turn on turf in North America and it takes some runners time and experience to master the course. As far as post position is concerned, the inside is not the best of post.

Unless a horse that very good speed to gain position at the sound of the bell, that runner runs the risk of getting shuffled.

Stalkers do very well on this course and runners that can save ground and skim the rail late can also succeed because often runners will fan out as they cross the dirt briefly before getting back on grass. Some players also like milers cutting back a bit in distance and that makes sense, as you have to finish in this race.

As far as the history of the BC Turf Sprint is concerned, it has only been run since 2008 so there are limited findings.

In the first 4 runnings, the favorite won half the time but average winner in that duration paid over $26 and the average superfecta paid over $13,000.

California based runners won the first 2 runnings of this race and last year Mizdirection made it three for three. Part owned by sports personality Jim Rome this filly beat the boys at their own game by coming from 11th of 14 to win going away by a half-length at a fat 6-1.

Last year, Mizdirection was coming off an extended vacation, as she had not raced since running second in May. She had won her 2 prior stakes on the hillside and trained up to the race with a classical work pattern.

Trainer Mike Puype had her drilling every 6 or 7 day and one of the drills included a 7-furlong work on the Anita grass course.

She will try to defend her title this year and is also coming off a layoff. She has not run since June but has been training forwardly with this race in mind.

Reneesgotzip ran third in this race last year and she has been ultra sharp this year. The first 4 finishers of the Eddie D. Stakes could all be back for more in the BC Turf Sprint.

The winner of that race Chips All In would have to supplement and that takes guts no matter how you slice it.

Bob Baffert has options with his runner Fed Biz but that guy would fit nicely in this spot. He took the Grade 1 Pat O’Brien in August and would be a legit contender if he shows up in this race.

A horse that would demand a long shot glance is Dimension. He ran fifth in his last race but that was against reigning Horse of the Year Wise Dan in the Woodbine Mile and Dimension would figure to appreciate the shorter journey of this race.

If Europeans are your thing, Lethal Force fits the bill. He just took a Group 1 across the pond and figures to be a betting price.

More to come on this race as it nears.
