Breeders Cup Turf Sprint Betting – Past Favorites Still Loom Large at Turf Sprint

Brian Mulligan What: Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Preview
Where: Churchill Downs
When: Saturday, November 6th
The accent will be on speed and a million-dollar purse will be on the line in the 5-furlong Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint so don’t blink or it will be too late to capitalize.
Just like in most of the Cup races, the connections that have had a game plan for quite some time are usually more capable of running big than runners than just decide late to compete in any one race.

That is what makes one to be a bit concerned regarding Caracortado, who has won sprinting on grass but is coming off a nose win in the Del Mar Mile Handicap in August. He had been pointing for the Mile but missed some training and opted for this race. With his style, things will have to unfold just right.

California Flag won this race in 2009, is sharp as a tack right now and will try to use the same springboard this year that was successful at Santa Anita two seasons ago and that’s a win in the Grade 3 Morvich. Although this guy has :21 and change speed, he doesn’t absolutely need the lead to win and there is nothing wrong with style options in this game.

Chamberlain Bridge, last year’s Turf Sprint hero, has been in a bit of a funk but he is a true horse for the course and was an interesting third in his final prep, a Grade 3 in Philly in early September. The Bret Calhoun runner has been working forwardly and posted a best of eleven :59 flat drill at Churchill on 10/19.

Bridge’s arch rival Regally Ready has won half of his 16 starts including a win over Chamberlain Bridge on the Churchill course at the Turf Sprint distance in May. He rebounded nicely on 10/16 at Woodbine after a horrible effort in a Philly stakes and his best asset may be that he can adapt to any kind of ground.

Gentleman and 6 for 21 turf performer Perfect Officer could be the bomb in the gimmicks in the Turf Sprint. The reformed claimer was taken from George Weaver by Michael Pino via the claim box in his 2011 debut and has been very tough since. He’s won two of his last 6 and should be value in this race especially if the horses that just beat him, Ben’s Cat and Havelock enter this race.

If you toss Havelock’s dirt races, his form brightens. He is 5 for 8 on grass but 6 for 14 overall. He ran well on the Churchill course last year losing by just a length in a N2X allowance but he’s won at a number of different venues and has a nice turn of late foot.

Any horse that can hit the exacta in 9 of 12 turf outs has to be given a valid look so enter Broken Dreams, a Tom Proctor student who is fresh from a win in the Grade 3 Maddy down the Santa Anita hillside. She has run well at a number of different venues and the Glen Hill Farm hombred has some class on the bottom side. Her dam’s dam One Dreamer took the BC Distaff on way to over $1.2 million career.

Look for selections soon after this race is offically drawn.
