Colonial Turf Cup Betting – Swift Warrior Outlasts The Field In Virginia

Posted by on 6/20/2013 7:48:10 PM

Sports betting sharps have to switch their attention on the racetrack from dirt to turf as the Grade-2 Colonial Turf Cup lines up this Saturday, just outside of Richmond in Virginia. This race is listed for 1 3/16 miles (9.5 furlongs) and as was mentioned, it is on turf, but this year’s winner is a horse that is well-rounded and has run on all types of surfaces.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, June 22nd, post time TBA
Where: Colonial Downs, New Kent County, VA
Pick: Swift Warrior

Air Support came in second to Turbo Compressor in the 2012 edition of this race and following that, he also finished second to the same horse in his next outing (the Grade-1 United Nations). But this five-year-old also won the Grade-2 Bowling Green Handicap last September for his fourth victory in a graded-stakes event, and Air Support has come a long way since finishing back in ninth in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

Atigun didn’t fare so well in his last graded-stakes event, coming in seventh at the Grade-2 Oaklawn Handicap, but that is a different type of race. This horse is also making his second start on turf since the very first of his career, in which Atigun finished ninth in a maiden race at Saratoga in 2011. He won an allowance race on turf in his last start in May at Churchill Downs, but this four-year-old will face a better field on Saturday and could come in as a horse betting underdog.

General Logan will be making just the third start of his career and even though both have been on turf, this four-year-old gelding has a lot to prove after a disappointing 13th-place result in the Grade-1 Hollywood Derby in November. General Logan won an allowance event in his first start, but he may have been thrown in the deep end in that race and he should be better on Saturday. Will that translate into a victory? Only time will tell.

Hyper has 18 starts in his career, but 14 of have either been allowance, maiden or claiming races, and the other four have been non-graded events. In those, Hyper has a top finish of second (in his most recent event, the Good Reward Stakes in May), and a low finish of ninth (the Wolferton Handicap last June). This six-year-old will need a little help and the field to come back to him if he is going to snag a victory on Saturday in Virginia.

London Lane is another horse making start No.3 of his career, and he is coming off a fourth at the non-graded Sussex Stakes, but that was way back in July of 2012. He is six years old and you have to wonder for a horse of this age, will London Lane be rusty? After 11 months off, it is going to be interesting to see how London Lane handles himself, especially down the stretch when fatigue sets in. He could end up in the category of horse betting darkhorses.

Roadhog is making his graded-stakes debut after winning his maiden on his second try, and then he finishing third in an allowance race at Monmouth Park. However, those were back in the summer of 2010 and if you think London Lane could be rusty, what about three years off for Roadhog? This six-year-old gelding would be a huge surprise to win the Colonial Turf Cup,

Swift Warrior started his 19-race career on dirt, but his last seven starts have come on turf, including back-to-back wins at the Grade-3 John B. Connolly Turf Handicap and Grade-3 Tampa Bay Stakes to start 2013. He did finish eighth in his last start, the Grade-2 Dixie Stakes in May, but overall this five-year-old has been pretty consistent throughout his career and a good finish wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for Swift Warrior.

Two Notch Road rounds out the field, and he was the third-place finisher in the 2010 Colonial Turf Cup behind Paddy O’Prado and Workin’ For Hops. He returned to the track this year after three years off, and so far he has posted a fifth at the Grade-3 Red Bank and a third at the Grade-2 Monmouth Stakes and if he continues to improve, this six-year-old gelding could steal a win.

How It Will Play Out

Look for Swift Warrior to bounce back in Virginia and pick up the win in your online betting book this weekend.
