Coronation Futurity Betting Predictions – Star Contender Proves His Worth At Woodbine

Posted by Marco Sussman on 11/8/2012 5:36:00 PM

Sports betting sharps keeping their eye on action north of the border will definitely be checking out the Coronation Futurity, one of the top races for two-year-olds in Canada. Reaching the winner’s circle in the Coronation Futurity can really show that a horse is ready for the big time, which means a trip south to the United States, and Star Contender will step up to the plate in 2012 to win a race that started way back in 1902.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, November 10th, post time TBA
Where: Woodbine Racetrack, Toronto, ON
Pick: Star Contender

Bookie’s Nightmare has yet to earn a win in three starts as he looks for the first victory of his career, and this will be his longest race after running at five furlongs and two races at 1 1/16 miles. He could be a bit of a darkhorse, even in this small field, but Bookie’s Nightmare hasn’t proven to be as dangerous as his name suggests.

Hesa Big Dude has only made one start, but he did win it in a maiden special-weight race at Fort Erie, and winning your first race is always good for a two-year-old. Now he has to transfer that speed to a more competitive stage and that is the next step in a thoroughbred’s development, but Hesa Big Dude has definitely shown the potential to be a solid three-year-old. First, he has to get through the crucial two-year-old season that is so important to a horse.

His Race To Win, like Bookie’s Nightmare, hasn’t won in three career starts, but he hasn’t finished lower than fourth, so that’s a start. He made his first start in a non-MSW race, finishing fourth in the non-graded Cup and Saucer, but His Race To Win is now trying to move to the next level. That entails challenging seriously in a non-MSW race and the Coronation Futurity is a race that really put a two-year-old in the spotlight. Watch out for His Race To Win.

Kitten Candy also hasn’t won in three starts, all MSW races, and he has a low finish of sixth so far. The major worry here will be the distance as Kitten Candy has only run seven furlongs, and at 1 1/16 miles, the two-year-old gelding may be out of his element. However, you never know what can happen and Kitten Candy could surprise a few people this weekend at Woodbine, especially with Luis Contreras on his back; Contreras has won the last two editions of the Coronation Futurity with Strike Oil (2010) and Maritimer (2011).

Star Contender has a great chance to be the horse betting favorite for this event after winning his last two starts, an MSW race and then the aforementioned Cup and Saucer, and even though it was a non-graded race, any win is a big accomplishment for a two-year-old. Star Contender will be steered by Patrick Husbands, who won the Coronation Futurity with Kesagami in 2005, so he obviously knows how to get around Woodbine. With a win in this race, Star Contender will likely move into the upper echelon of two-year-old colts in Canada, and that will raise his profile in the United States as he heads into his third year.

Up With The Birds won an MSW race at Woodbine, taking the victory at 1 1/16 miles, so this is a hugely important race for this two-year-old colt. Many were raving about the performance of Up With The Birds in this maiden-breaking race, but an event like the Coronation Futurity is much bigger and some horses can sense when the lights get brighter. That can lead to nerves, which can lead to a poor performance and that is going to be the main goal for Up With The Birds and his handlers.

How It Will Play Out

Up With The Birds will be a contender for this race, and you can’t count out Kitten Candy as the experience of his jockey could really come into play on Saturday. But Star Contender is the class of this show and he’ll prove it by blowing away the field in a dominant performance. He may need one more race in a larger field to prove that he is the best two-year-old colt in Canada, but if he doesn’t, a convincing victory at Woodbine on Saturday would do a lot for his name. Place a wager on Star Contender in your online betting book this weekend.
