Hot Market

Posted by on 9/8/2014 10:36:37 PM

The term hot market can refer to a soaring real estate situation or a frenzy on Wall Street but the handicappers that witnessed a debut at Del Mar by the racer Hot Market has an entirely different concept in mind.

Granted, his first race was at the absolute bottom level for races in Southern California. It was a maiden $20,000 sprint and a full field of 12 was in the gate.

The morning line favorite was Salt Power, who was tabbed at 7-2 but the action came in on Hot Market and he went the slight chalk when the windows closed.

To read the comments of the chart just does not do the horse justice as it refers to his performance. The Equibase chart reads ‘Hot Market broke slowly, went up inside, then big along the rail and dueled on a short lead on the backstretch and turn, inched away off the rail in the stretch and won clear under some urging and steady handling late.’

That sure is a mouthful but it didn’t tell the full story.

Hot Market broke dead last in the field and he had to try to negotiate by running inside. He appeared to be a bit rank but got to third in a flash, made the lead, quickly put away the pacesetter Ron’s Boy, shook loose at the top of the lane while running straight and then extending his winning margin at the wire to cash by 3 and a quarter lengths.

The splits of :23.14, :46.64, 1:10.71 were ordinary but the final time of 1:17.18 was adequate considering the class. Hot Market earned a solid 73 Beyer Speed Figure and his connections have to be careful to put him in the absolute right spot next time so that he can build on the eye-catching debut and not go backward.

Looking back at Hot Market’s debut, it could have been fully understood considering the runner’s connections. Going into the race trainerDean Pederson was 9 for 36 or 25% the last 5 years with debuting maiden claimers with a median payoff of 5-2 and 6 ran second. His sire Singletary was 4 for 61 with debuters and the sire could run. Singletary took debut at 2, won BC Mile, and banked over $1.7 million as a turf specialist. Hot Market’s dam's lone win in 6 tries came on turf and Hot Market is her first to race.

And if you deep in the pedigree, it gets even better. Hot Market’s third dam in the bloodline is Your Ladyship, who won 17 times, took a ton of stakes and earned nearly $550,000.

Hot Market was claimed out of his debut by Northern California based trainer Andy Mathis. Mathis has a good eye for a purchase and he will have options for this racer. He could keep him in Southern California and seek a $40,000 starter race, either at Los Alamitos or Santa Anita or he could take the runner up north and maybe attempt to find an entry-level allowance race on the grass.

For the record, Mathis is 20 for 79 or 25% the last 5 years with first off the claim runners.

Wherever Hot Market shows up next time, he will deserve a huge look.
