Delaware Handicap Betting Tips – Solid Field Preparing For Delaware Handicap

Posted by Marco Sussman on 7/18/2012 4:23:04 PM

Sports betting players will see a very deep field at the Grade 1 Delaware Handicap at Delaware Park on Saturday, and the winner is a horse that will take the lead for the biggest female prize of the year coming down the homestretch for the 2012 season.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, July 21st, post time TBA
Where: Delaware Park, Wilmington, DE
Pick: Awesome Maria

Royal Delta bounced back from a tough ninth-place run at the Grade 1 Dubai World Cup to win the Grade 2 Fleur De Lis at Churchill Downs by eight lengths, and this four-year-old filly has finished in the top three of nine of her 11 starts, including a stirring win in the Breeders Cup Ladies Classic. Mike Smith was moved into the saddle for Jose Lezcano for the Fleur De Lis, and there is a good chance that he’ll end up on Royal Delta against on Saturday.

Awesome Maria finished third at the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Handicap and that was the first time that the five-year-old mare hadn’t won in seven races. In a 15-race career, Awesome Maria hasn’t finished lower than fourth and that was in one lone race. There are many horse betting players that think Awesome Maria is in the lead in regards to the race for the Eclipse Award for Champion Older Filly or Mare, and a win over Royal Delta would definitely put her on the shortlist.

Cash For Clunkers finished one spot ahead of Awesome Maria at Belmont Park and it was easily the biggest race in a short career for the four-year-old, who has ran just seven races and won four, but five were maiden or allowance races. In a graded stakes race, Cash For Clunkers proved that she belongs and she’ll be a factor on Saturday.

St. John’s River has finished in the top three in eight of his nine races after a third-place run at the Fleur De Lis and six of the races have been graded stakes races, so the four-year-old has run against top competition and is used to it. She won the Delaware Oaks last year, so St. John’s River should be right at home at Delaware Park.

Pachattack has plenty of experienced in graded stakes races, running 14 of them and winning two, including the Grade 3 DoubleDogDare at Keeneland back in March. The six-year-old returned to the track to finish sixth in the Grade 3-All Along Stakes at Colonial Downs and Pachattack is prone to falling back in the pack and finishing with poor results, but she can also surprise as well and could be a nice horse betting darkhorse to ride.

Love And Pride came out on top in the Grade 3 Obeah at Delaware Park for her first win in a stakes race and she will be one of two horses that will be prepared for the Delaware Handicap by Todd Pletcher, who has won this race three times and obviously knows how to get a horse ready for the Handicap. However, Love And Pride has had three different jockeys on his back in the last three races and that could hurt her chances.

Tiz Miz Sue came in second to Love And Pride at the Obeah and it was her second straight runner-up result at the event, so she is suffering from a little bridesmaid’s disease at Delaware Park. Tiz Miz Sue did recently win the Grade 3-Azeri, and now in 20 starts she has finished outside the top three in just four starts, which is a fantastic rate of success for the five-year-old.

Afleet Lady finished second to Royal Delta in the Fleur De Lis, and that was just her third start in a graded stakes race. She has two second-place finishes as well as a fifth-place run and there probably aren’t high hopes for Afleet Lady, but she has an excellent pedigree as she is an offspring of Northern Afleet, who is an offspring of Afleet Alex, which won the 2005 Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.

Finally, Check Point rounds out the field after a third-place result in the Obeah and for all her experience, the six-year-old has just five graded stakes races under her belt. This will be a difficult hill for her to climb in a talented field, but Check Point is coming off a good performance and that could carry over to Saturday.

This is one of the best fields you will see among the fillies all year and it should be a close race to the end, but Awesome Maria will show that she deserves to be the Champion Older Female and she’ll get past Royal Delta coming down the stretch to steal a win in your online betting book.

Delaware Handicap Betting Pick: Awesome Maria
