BC Filly And Mare Sprint Early Preview

Posted by on 9/29/2014 9:45:35 PM

The Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint will be renewed for the 8th time at Santa Anita in just a few of weeks and one thing handicappers have to deal with is this demanding distance of 7 furlongs.

It is one of the toughest trips in the game because a runner has to roll just about every step of the way. There are no breathers. A runner usually cannot dawdle out of the gate and depend on the leaders coming back so that means a runner must try to gain some semblance of position early on.

Last year Groupie Doll opened up the 5-2 favorite in the F and M Sprint and she turned the tables on archrival Judy the Beauty, who has just beaten her at Keeneland.

Groupie Doll sat 7th early, got within a half-length of the lead after a half-mile in :44.19, made the top and had a 2-length lead at the top of the lane with a 1:08. 19 three-quarters time before getting the 7 furlongs in 1:20.75.

She earned a 107 Beyer Speed Figure for her effort while paying $8.

Going into the F and M Sprint, Groupie Doll has a bullet work at Churchill after her prior second and got a nice feel for the Anita surface with a :47 2/5 work a few days before the big event.

Judy the Beauty will likely be back for more in this race. She won at Santa Anita in March and is coming off a game win in a Grade 3 at Del Mar when she successfully dealt with the rail while wide.

Perfection is nearly impossible to achieve in any endeavor but Stopshoppingdebbie has been on some kind of spree. She has raced 9 times and won every single one of her efforts. She has never tried Graded company, so she will be getting the acid test if she makes it to Santa Anita, but the intrigue is there.

Kauai Katie was wide in her first 2 starts this year but the back class is there as she won a Grade 2 early in her career.

Living the Life has won a third of her 21 starts and is fresh from a Grade 2 win at Presque Isle. The concern about this miss is she has never been on dirt.

My Miss Aurelia hails from the Todd Pletcher barn, enough said. She came off an extended layoff to run third in July and her connections wheeled right back in the Ballerina but she caught Artemis Agrotera, who could be her archrival again today.

Artemis Agrotera has won 5 of 7, all 4 of her sprints and proved the Ballerina win was no fluke when she repeated in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom on September 20. She has natural speed but doesn’t need the lead to succeed.

Before last year, only 17% of the favorites had won the F and M Sprint. Keeneland’s Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes has produced the winner of the F and M Sprint 4 of the last 5 years.

Handicappers have to be aware that speed has not been kind in the F and M Sprint. The pacesetters for the first 7 editions of theF and M Sprint have finished 3rd, 5th, 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th and 5 th.
