The Eastern Influence

Posted by on 12/24/2015 3:03:51 AM

Eastern invaders into California are sometimes popular at the windows and sometimes they are left alone but Santa Anita players will get a look at some quality runners from the other coast this week.

The players that come to mind are Cavorting, Marking and Watershed and they seem primed to make a point in from of the California crew.

Cavorting was troubled as the 3-1 chalk in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint and she completed her recent workout tab with a :48 flat spin recently at Anita. Watershed worked a couple of click slow and Marking was clocked in :47.40 in the most recent drill.

Neal McLaughlin has been overlooking these stars of the stable as his brother Kiaran is taking a bit of R and R and he was very pleased with these drills.

Formerly down in Florida, where the weather can get sticky, these runners seem to be thriving in the cooler weather in the mornings in Arcadia.

Cavorting is the real deal. She broke her maiden by 11 lengths, took a Grade 2 next out and proved it was no fluke when she took the Grade 1 Test last summer. She was hung out to dry when 7 wide in the 14-horse BC F and M Sprint but still was coming hard at the end.

She gets her class from her talented dam Promenade Girl, who was a Grade 2 winner and banked nearly $700,000. And if you go deep in her pedigree Grade 1 winner and near $750,000 earner Another Review will emerge.

Her best asset is her ability to adapt. She can win on the lead or come from left field and she rates a long look when she shows in the entries.

Marking was favored in his debut and he won in professional manner. Rested for about 6 weeks, he was wheeled back against entry-level allowance foes and he won going away with a career best 98 Beyer Speed Figure.

He is another that gets his quality from the dam Seventh Street, who won 5 of 10 start including a pair of Grade 1s.

Those looking for a watershed moment can point to the 2 for 3 sophomore Watershed. After drawing off for fun in his debut at Saratoga, he lost best chance in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop when off poorly.

After a 6-week layoff, McLaughlin brought him back at Keeneland and he won in facile manner. The chart says he cleared at will in hand which suggests his best stuff is still ahead of him. Watershed’s family is solid. His dam won twice but maybe more importantly she is kin to double Grade 3 winner and near $300,000 earner Marietta.

Watershed’s lone sibling Footbridge has won 3 of 15 so far and that runner earned over $250,000.

Since his last win, this son of Bernardini has been busy. He posted several drills at Palm Meadows including a best of the morning workout and with his style; if he gets a hot pace and clear sailing he will be a factor when he shows in the entries.

When these Eastern interloper show out west give them respect because the value should be there more often than not.
